Personally I would never try to grow any of those in a hanging basket. Dwarf varieties only work best in hanging baskets. But yes you'd need the biggest basket you can find. So-called 'hayrack' or 'co-co nest' baskets - the ones that are made of wrought iron-like metal and use fiber liners - come up to 18-20" in diameter. Down here Home Depot and Lowes both carry them.

Thanks Dave. So what varieties do you recommend for hanging baskets? Perhaps these three will stay in ground level pots.

Any of the dwarf varieties. They were bred specifically for small containers or hanging baskets - Tiny Tim, Micro Tom, Red Robin, Husky Cherry Red, Patio, Siberian, etc.

I am growing Patio tomatoes is the window sill in ONE gallon jugs and getting good fruit .

I plant tumbling toms, yellow and red in 10 inch hanging baskets and get along great. Totally Tomatoes is also offering several other hanging basket varieties. They have a Gold Stripe series. There are also several more new ones.

Here is a row of them from this fall. I started them too late to get much production last fall. We had a few tomatoes.

During the spring and summer this year, we are planning on having 50 baskets to sell and 75-100 to grow out and pick to sell in addition to our other cherry tomatoes.

Here is one in full bloom. They will grow and produce fruit all year, if you keep them watered and fertilized. Very impressive little plants.

Jay - curious as to how many Tumbling Tom plants you are putting into each 10" basket? Looks like 3 or 4 plants.

Two plants, One red, one yellow.

It does look like more. I talked with another grower who put 3 or 4 in a 10 inch basket. As the plants competed, they would produce earlier than mine with two.
