I have found an exotic that I would LOVE to grow in E. TN: Puya alpestris, also known as Sapphire Tower. It is a bromeliad recommended for desert dwellers (which is what my front yard is by August, I assure you!) due to its tolerance of temperature variation and love of dry conditions. Granted, I would probably have to dig a big pit and fill with mostly sand in order to please it, but it would be worth it! You have to see this plant!
