Blooming native azaleas and pic posting question

Hey everybody,

I'm hoping to scout out blooming native azaleas this spring to locate potential seed sources. If any of you in the middle-ish part of the state, say from just west of the Tennessee River to the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau, know of any that I could access I'd be grateful for the info. I wouldn't harm the plants at all, of course. At this point all I want to do is locate and ID them. Seed collection is in the late fall, and that doesn't harm them, either. It would probably clutter up the forum less if people emailed me directly with info rather than posting it.

And on another topic, I'm a complete doofus about how to get photos into my postings here. Or am I misremembering about being able to incorporate photography in postings in this forum? The GW instructions, which are clear as mud to me anyway, suggest that only forums with galleries allow pic uploading... Anyhoo, what I'm asking you more 'puter-savvy folk out there is A) can I put a pic in a posting or can I onlypost a link to a photosharing site like Photobucket? and B) if I can put a pic in a posting, how the heck do I accomplish that?

Thanks in advance for any and all info on both subjects!

If you two come over to the house for dinner and I'll hook you up with some. That way you can help me ID ALL of our plants! You realize that we have no idea what 3/4 of this stuff at Cheapwood is right?

Marty I've done the Photobucket thing before and posted pics on GW but unless you do it several times......duh, I forgot how to do it. It can't be that hard though because I did actually do it. I'm glad to see that you don't make me feel like a complete idiot in everything!

Alicia, around here you can buy bags of long fiber dried sphagnum moss at garden centers -- I've even seen it at Lowe's, too. That's what I use. I just rub it through a strainer, the ordinary kind with a handle you can buy in the kitchen tools section of a grocery store. It's the same moss as florists use, just dried. If the potting mix stays too moist or drainage isn't sufficient, add perlite. Don't worry about the seemingly big size of the perlite relative to the tiny seed. The sphagnum moss (or live moss, like Mainegrower uses) gets the seed going and then it roots down easily into the medium below. It seems to me azalea seedlings likes a lot of oxygen in the soil and not too much wet. Once they get beyond a certain size it becomes less critical. The other thing to do is make sure your containers have as many drain holes as you can reasonably punch in the bottom. I use an ice pick and put maybe 20 sizable holes in the bottom of a 3" x 5" container. You want the water to flow freely out of the bottom. Soeur

Need tips on rooting native azaleas

Deciduous rhododendrons like most of the native American species are difficult to root. The best course is to take cuttings when the current year's growth has hardened somewhat but is still flexible. Wound the base of the cuttings, use a relatively strong rooting hormone and place the cuttings in a mixture of 50% peat and 50% perlite. Cover the flat with clear plastic on a wire frame and keep in a bright place without direct sun. Then hope and be patient. Anoher option is to collect seed when ripe, sow on spahgnum or live moss above the peat/perlite mixture in a flat covered with plastic. Water with distilled water or rain water. The seedlings grow relatively quickly.

We moved here May 31 2009 and discovered many wonderful plants/trees. I am going to attempt to start some root cuttings from a yellow azalea and an orange azalea that have been on the property for quite some time and are in the shade much of the year. The orange one only had 4 blooms & is very tall, (trying to get to the sun?) The yellow had a lot of blooms and is leggy. I took some photos when they were blooming, will try and get them posted. ANY ADVICE ON how to take care of the cuttings? The guy who built this place in 1988 did a good job with his plantings. 3 acres with mosses, ferns, trees (Franklinia, need advice for propagating too)creek coming down the mountain. Have Cherry, persimmon, blueberries, grapes, pears, asian pears, blackberries, nut trees. Has an old pond that needs a lot of work to restore... kwoods... Yes, but I presently have only one. With limited space and 12 other species, plus several hybrids, of Native Azaleas, they represent a large percentage of the shrubs in my garden. I was disappointed in it's performance for years, until all of the Southern Magnolias were removed next door and opened up the morning sun, it now is showing it's true potential. I will probably obtain another one, as I have a nearby space where some old evergreen Azaleas are looking pretty sad. Sam... There is a nursery in GA, that specializes in Native Azaleas (and other Natives), and he has reasonable prices. Google Lazy K Nursery or go to Dave's GWD to check it out and click on the website link there. His nursery is near Callaway Gardens and Providence Canyon. Rb

Here's a pic of a native azalea blooming on the side of the road near Shiloh. I have a small one in my yard that was collected from a ditch as a seedling several years ago near Lexington, about 20 miles North of this one.

What a beauty! That's what I'm talkin' about!

It looks most like R. periclymenoides, Pinxsterbloom, but could be a natural hybrid, too.
