I always try a new variety or two each year, and rarely does it knock my socks off, so it rarely gets a second chance. I am probably being somewhat ignorant by not at least giving them a second trial year.

its not a matter of ignorance that you didn't grow them a second year. Any variety in any year can not perform as you expected or hoped for and that's why, since I assume you selected those varieties yourself initially, it would make sense, at least to me, to give them another chance. ( smile)

Having said that, I am curious to what my fellow tomato growers think about the following varieties:
Zogola
Sioux
Rose
Coustralee
Kosovo..and
Pruden's Purple
Please tell me why I should take these bad boys out of my refrigerated coffee can & give them a second chance, or why they should stay there along with all the freebees that I get from Totally Tomatoes on the rare occasion that I order from them.

I've grown all that you have on your list and of course I have some that I prefer over others, such as Kosovo, Cuostralee, Zogola, for instance, but my tastebuds aren't yours, and my soil, my weather, my use of amendments and my way of growing tomatoes isn't necessarily yours either. ( smile)

So why not regrow the ones that interest YOU the most?

I think I will give those 3 another shot at stardom, maybe the problem I had with Cuostralee is that I had been misspelling it all along, it sure is one ugly tomato though!..

Harry, it shouldn't be ugly at all. Take a look at some pictures you find online with Google and you'll find a nice smooth large red beefsteak fruit. Maybe go to Google and select IMAGES and the enter the name of the variety.

Cuostralee is one fine tomato... at least in my soil and area.

Rose, Pruden's Purple and Kosovo are among the very best I've ever grown. I grow them every year now.

Only grew Cuostralee once and it didn't do well in my garden. Same with Sioux. Might try C again, though.

Zogola was healthy and prolific but too tart for my taste.

I have thought about releasing this because it is a good tomato. I just don't have very many seeds and not sure Darrel or Laurel would want to fool with small number. (bug Fusion )

I'd think any of the others would do well provided you have a warm and long enough season.

Souix has done excellent for me in several areas particularily those with hot climates like the central and southern US. Did you grow it in one of those cool wet New England summers that happened a few years back?

I've grown the following:

Prudens Purple (2004). Very early and large. Were inedible from yellow shoulders penetrating to the core. Possibly due to sublethal sunscald when the plant was young, or just a physiological problem.

Kosovo (2006). Very bland heart.

Sioux (2007). Determinate, early, not a heavy yielder and very firm, solid fruit. Not much flavor but good chopped up for salsa.
