Fetilizing tomatoes with acid loving fertilizer?

My garden soil is alkaline testing at 8.0, which I realize is kind of sweet for acid loving plants like tomatoes. I was wondering if fertilizing with azeala food or another acid loving fertilizer would benefit my tomatoes? Last years production was not very good and my plants suffered from many diseases. I realize that I could add sulpher to my garden soil to increase acidity, but I am curious to know what fertilizing with an acid fertilizer would achieve. Is it possible that the soil being too sweet could cause tomato plants to be unhealthy? If I can use this fertilizer in place of the normal tomato fertilizer, would it burn the roots if I added it directly to the planting hole? Any help that I could get in the answering of this question would be greatly appreciatied....Lisa
