I don't want to make the same mistakes

Hello everyone. Sorry for the dummy question, but what do I add to get thick, strong plants, with flowering starting near the bottom of the plant?I did some research on the net. Is it potash? Is there a natural source of this? I'm in Japan and can't get hold of proprietary things.

I have been a very lazy gardener as I am so busy, and the last few years just put seeds in a jiffy pot and then transplanted them into the garden, well amended with homemade compost. Then did nothing else really. What happens to me every year is that I get tall spindly plants and not much fruit. Last year was the most amazing. The tomatoes grew as tall as the second floor, then bent over and took over the garden. Flowering started late, but I did get tomatoes eventually.

It's such a waste to be unsuccessful like this! I have limited space and should be doing better!

Thanks

Ashita
