Vine for Huge Block Wall - Full AZ Sun
Comments (17)Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. After reading more on here and talking to others, I think Cats' Claw is what I'm going to go with on the back wall. I'm planning on planting it on the ledge where you can see some of the round bushes and ocatillos. A few follow-up questions: 1.How far down do the roots grow? 2. Will they be able to go under the footing of the smaller (3-4') wall in front? I have a pool going in there this year. 3. Are the roots strong enough to cause problems with a pool? 4. Will they even be able to travel that far? 5. Can you control where Cat Claw grows? I want it to just grow up the wall, not OUT horizontally over the rocks. 6. How far apart should I space them 7. What size should I buy? 1 gallon? 5 gallon? Thanks again! This post was edited by anthemaz on Sat, Apr 6, 13 at 15:09...See MoreWhat Vine? So many choices?

Comments (2)Hey Aaron, I hope I am helping, and not upsetting... You state that you are in zone 9 SoCal, but where? Do you have ocean influence, or are you more inland? Do you get frost? How hot in summer? We have grown this vine in zone 9 NoCal. It got burnt in summer with much less sun than yours is going to get, and it died with the first freeze we got. We bought ours in a large planter, already blooming, and it continued for some time, so it wasn't just greenhouse shock that killed it. If you are more coastal, and don't get frost or extreme summer temps for at least 6 hours of afternoon sun per day as you state, you may be fine. Be aware, that this is a twiner, not a tendril climber or aerial rooter. Chicken wire would be okay but probably not great, (not to mention, uuuuuugly). Lattice would be much more attractive, and this is also what we used. It did just fine finding it's way, though it needed a little training at first, as you can imagine. Another option, and much less conspicuous and much cheaper, would be to run aluminum or galvanized wire vertically up the wall, spaced no further than a foot or so apart, though you could certainly put them closer if you desired. For under $100, you could cloak that entire wall, all the way up. If you were cloak the entire wall with lattice, you would be looking at closer to $1,000, if not more. Hope this helped a little... Feel free to email me if you have any other questions you think I could help with. I don't come here that often, so I would not likely see a follow-up question... Happy gardening! Comments (14)I wonder if Orkin decided to make the bugs super large after all the problems they had with the "small" bugs that ran across the screen, do you remember? People thought it was a real bug not a commercial and would throw things at theirs televisions breaking them? Guess these ones giant ones we know are not real :)...See Morecannahavana
