Square Foot Gardening

something burrowing/building a nest

Hi,

I have a SFG and in between two of the squares something dug a big hole. The hole is about the size of my fist, and a little deeper (I can pretty easily put my fist up to my wrist or so in the hole. It is filled with grass and moss. there was minimal damage to plants, mostly digging up, and not much eating the plants. It was between 2 squares of spinach.

What do you think made this nest? What should I do about it?

Either Field Mice, or Rabbits is my vote. Most likely rabbits - have you seen any around?

Last year I had a momma rabbit go and make a nest like you are describing not 10 feet from my back door, right in my lawn :)

It was adorable watching the babies grow up, and momma come feed them every night..... the only annoying part is I couldn't mow the lawn for a month for fear of running them over if they moved around and I didn't see them!

May be a rabbit. You don't want 4-6 rabbits having a very short commute between safety and dinner, despite the fact that they may attract Bambi and Thumper.

If they are trying to attach a paper nest to the underside of your deck, spraying WD-40 on the spot will keep them from building there. But there are also German yellow jackets that nest in holes in the ground....or in a crack in your siding and get into your walls. That's nasty stuff! If they are going into a hole in your house, call an exterminator....my son landed in the ER because he was attacked when he accidentally disturbed a nest! Nasty bugs!! HOSP building a nest now

Well, the HOSP has stopped his building. They never ended up putting too much material in the nest box. Maybe they were just getting a head start for next spring. Little do they know that they aren't getting that nest box for themselves. I won't let them nest in my yard. That nest box is for the tree swallows.

It might be worms breaking the surface and/or birds digging for worms... I see it in my front yard two days after it rains. There is a skunk that sometimes digs big holes in my beds, uprooting seedlings, looking for beatle larvae... It also eats my water cress growing in a container.. So if you start see giant holes, a skunk is a possibility. I also get raccoons that do the same thing, minus the smell..

Yes, and if you look closely it had something in it's mouth. Both parents showed up briefly this morning too. I was wondering if they can lay eggs twice in a season or if its just that habits die hard when you've been flying back and forth from that nesting box for a month. They gave the call they used to get the chickadees to fledge. I guess they were just making sure everyone is out.

Make it leave or kill it, whatever your moral compass sez is best. Many ways to make it leave, all involve making it known the hole isn't safe.

Yes, bury the hole and the bunny will look elsewhere else to nest. May be time to put up some garden protection as the bunnies will come back to feed.

I'd guess rabbits too. They keep digging in my garden this year. I had doubts at first it was bunnies b/c the very tiny lettuce starts in the be were all intact but in a later incident, they made more of a bunny shaped hole and they are the most prolific creatures out here. They've dug in mine 4 or 5 times. They wait a couple weeks then find some more newly sprouted beans to dig in. Soon, I think everything will be big enough to handle them.
