it's spring!! it's spring!!

Hello to all!!

I am officially Out Of Hibernation. It's SPRINGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!! :-)

I hope everyone is enjoying their own personal springs so far. I am having tons of fun looking at all the plants eagerly--or not so eagerly--leaping out of the ground. Also tons of fun pruning, picking up leaves, pulling weeds, planting daylilies, and so on and so forth.

It looks like I'll also be having more fun than ever with water this year. Today I brought home five big plastic barrels to fill up with lotus, water lilies, and other aquatics. I can't wait to see how they do!

Unfortunately, it's gonna be a busy spring for me, with lots of dog events taking up many of my weekends -- so I'll be missing some of the spring plant events. I'll be at the Racheff sale this coming weekend, but I'll be missing the Talahi sale -- BOOOOOO -- as well as the East TN/Knoxville Plant Swap -- BOOOOOOOO!!!!!! I even *think* I'll be missing the mid-TN Swap, but I'm not sure about that one yet. But I WILL be setting up pre-arranged swaps, and I'll be taking stuff to Cheryl/TnShadyLady's house for people to take home during the swap, so I'll be participating even if I'm not actually there!

I'll see y'all around the forum, now that the weather is warming up. I'm already enjoying my crabapples, plums, daffodils, camellias, oh, all sorts of stuff -- and my first azaleas opened today! Happy Spring, everyone!

I will be so glad when I can empty the garages and get all my stuff potted up or planted in the ground! I am in that labor intensive stage where I drag/roll/carry things in and out depending on the weather.

I just recieved my first lotus which will go in my whiskey barrel. Every time I go to UT Gardens, I drool over the lotus they have at the entrance. I have been doing small water features for the last couple of years and they really add to your garden. I even had a nice sized frog take up residence in my whiskey barrel last summer.

So sorry that you are going to miss several of the swaps - - but we'll see if we can't manage to gather up some neat stuff for you!

Anemone coronaria de caen - both mixed (St. Brigid) and Dr. Fokker (purple) and a white that I forgot the name of. A quick perusal of websites shows them hardy from zone 5 or zone 7, depending on which site you go to; Dave's garden lists zone 6. Fortunately the big box store which took advantage of my naivety said Zone 5 and since winters are not as cold as they once were, they happily have come back for 3 years now, blooming in May. I can post photos, but that would only clog up this post. Perhaps I got lucky, or perhaps their true zonal tolerance is unknown. But they sure are bright little jewels in May. I also have anemone blanda which are tiny and light purple and completely different and not as captivating. I also really like wood hyacinths. My grandmother gave me some of her light purples and pinks that she has had for decades. I have traded for dark purple and white and am thinking about "naturalizing" them along a path through our woods when I have built up enough volume. I am really thinking spring now! Found out it was Nymph when pawing through the Royal Colors site (they have a sale!!). Checked my packaging and from the Netherland Bulb Company and it definitely says Blossom Peacock!! Still....I love the Nymph bloom. And, for $13, it was a bargain. Can't wait for the sales in Houston next year! It's nice to see the bulbs that you are buying...even if they surprise you every now and then!! :-) Kristi

Thanks again guys! @BeachPlants (Rian?) (Sorry, not good with names yet) Yeah, winter didnt last long. But when it was here, it was a killer. Literally. Yeah... i sure am addicted XD thanks for the luck in track. My school is the league champions so everyone is going to be against us. Gotta do my best! @paul snow ehh? The closest thong we got to snow was little bits of hail earlier in winter. Lol. Ive only been in snow a few times. @donna yeah, the animals :P my mom like to buy those. The ones in the dirt are manatees. There is also real animals like cats and dogs running around. Its a constant battle between cacts, dogs, and cacti around here. @rosiemarie yeah, its very varied. I had a friend come over once and he was just in awe at the amount of them, as well as the diversity. Im glad i had help with the shelves too. I couldnt have done this by myself. these shelves are actually very handy.

It seems like there have been far fewer "neat" plants at the Talahi sales the last few years. If I remember correctly, they used to have a lot of unusual stuff a few years back. The last two years, I haven't even bothered to buy anything. I got there early to make sure not to miss anything, but all I saw plant-wise was lots of stuff that I could have found at Home Depot for probably less money. They have lots of plants, but nothing that catches my eye. Has anyone else noticed this?
