Radishes and Green Onions

Hi! I have a couple questions... I planted radishes, and as per the calender, they should be about ready! The tops look great... but when I dig a little at the base, there seems to be No Radish. Just a red root. Are they just not ready yet? or am I over/under watering? Also, I saw on Mel's site that you can grow green onions with a longer white part... anyone know how you do that? It looked like you just put an additional frame around that square and add more soil. Just a little at a time as the onion grows? If anyone has tried that, any tips would be appreciated! Thanks!

What kind of Radish did you grow? Not all radish make round bulbs like what is common at the grocery store. Many grow long roots, often redish. They eat the same ;-)

What I've read, but never tried, is to plant the onion set (if you are planting from sets) about an inch deeper than you would for storage onions.

Here's my garden. Muskmelons in the near bed, tomatoes behind them. To the right are sweet peppers and Dragon Tongue bush beans. To the left are pommegranate "trees". In the back (you can barely make it out) are the peach tree and boysenberry vines on the ladder thing. I didn't have a lot of space when I was planning everything, and I made a few mistakes on placing the poms to the south of the veg beds, but it somehow seems to work out anyway:).

Sounds to me like you went back in time when you stopped by that market! Was gas $1 a gallon too? We went to the St Paul market Saturday. Of course I took in lots of info on everything! Prices were generally higher than our local market but some things were even. Scallions and radishes seem to always be $1 a bunch. Their asparagus and rhubarb were a dollar higher than ours and some bunches were smaller. $5 a bunch there. It is funny that someone like my MIL didn't notice prices or bunch size or how stuff looked. She bought asparagus and plants at what I thought were the worst booths to choose- higher priced and crappy looking stuff. I guess that is how some of these vendors keep up with better vendors when they really shouldn't. Eggs and meat were very pricey. Plants were standard and there were plants everywhere! No one had much high tunnel produce. All the high tunnels seemed to be growing bedding plants to sell. Lastly, the Asian vendors were, as usual, way cheaper. Not much unusual stuff as I thought. I did buy ramps, but no Napa, bok choy, not that many greens. I bought 2 huge bunches of mint for $1 each and they also had pea shoot bunches which I talked my MIL into buying.

My radishes took about 50% longer than what the package said. Be patient. :)

Thanks Everyone! I will just wait... The package does show that they should be shaped as typical radishes. As for the onions, they were started from seed. So I guess, unless I run across other ideas, I will just let them grow as usual.

This is the 1st year I'm trying the green onions (aka white bunching onions/scallions) like Mel suggests. What I did was dig down about 3" before sowing the seed, leaving the soil to the side. As the onions grow up I'll be slowly replacing the soil around the onions. I also have some white bunching onions that I started from seed about 6 weeks ago and I'll be using the same idea for them when I put them in the ground this week. It's also a good thing to do when growing leeks.

Great idea removing some soil to start with, then putting it back! thanks! I think I will try that on the next square I plant! Please let me know how it works out! This is the first year Im doing the white bunching onions as well. Also.. update on the radishes... they are starting to LOOK like radishes!! Looks like they will be ready really soon now!! cant wait to try them!

My radishes (at least the first set) took quite a bit longer than the package said they should, but now they're finally getting round :-)

:) I just harvested the first of my radishes today! They turned out great! I didnt harvest the whole square, as some were not ready yet... but I will have fresh radishes in my salad for dinner tonight!! Yea!!
