The Herb Society of Nashville's sale is "Saturday, April 17, 2010" in the Sports Arena at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. A listing of plants expected for sale are located on "http://www.herbsocietynashville.org/events_open_to_ the_ public.htm". What a wonderful list! !

Awesome! This sounds neat & is close to me. =) Herbs are the one type of plant I usually have the hardest time starting from seed too (exceptions being known easy to grow ones like Basil). Let's try to keep this post on the top so I don't forget about it (along with other people)...lol.

I had a great time as usual, took a new herb gardner with me and we bought lots on herbs. I bought Lavendar and Rosemary for stock plants to grow for next years sales. Put them all in big pots until the greenhouse is done and then I will use them in the landscape.

I'm no expert on companion planting, and there are whole volumes written on the subject. But in brief (and I don't pretend to be scientific about it!) there is a belief that certain plants do better when grown together. Sometimes one plant will keep harmful insects away from the other, sometimes one will bring useful insects to help pollinate the flowers of the other. Basil, for instance, attracts bees, which are needed to pollinate tomatoes, and so they make good companions. Sometimes you will have one plant some distance from another to act as a decoy. Garlic chives will attract aphids away from roses. Often you'll find that companion plants are members of the same family, and like the same conditions. Other times you'll find plants growing together that balance each other in their uses of nutrients - one may use a lot of nitrogen, the other might provide it. Some act in other ways to be good companions. For instance, Anise deters pests from Brassicas by camouflaging their odour and improves the vigour of plants grown nearby. It deters aphids, fleas, reduces cabbage worms.Coriander and anise seeds sown together will germinate more quickly. Borage accumulates silica and potassium, of great use when growing flowering and fruiting plants such as Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Pumpkin, Tansy, Tomatoes, Rose, Squash, Strawberries. Chillies help plants which are affected by root rot and other Fusarium diseases. French marigold kills harmful nematodes. Horehound improves the fruiting of tomatoes. Yarrow is a good companion plant for most plants because it provides a lot of nutrients for them, especially those will need to produce their essential oils (the highly perfumed plants like lavender and basil, for instance). Yarrow is one of the so-called Physician Plants. Grown near a sick plant, it helps it to recover. Thyme is also a Physician Plant. So is marjoram/oregano. Some plants will help prevent grass and weeds from growing nearby. One such is Arrowroot, another is comfrey. Comfrey also is an excellent companion palnt because it keeps soil rich and moist, accumulates calcium, phosphorus, silica, nitrogen, magnesium, potassium, and iron, acts as a trap for slugs and because the rotting leaves make good fertiliser. I need to check this, but I think it's coriander which helps prevent fennel from seeding too much and becoming a weed, which it's otherwise likely to do. Fennel has the reputation for being the overall worst companion plant of all - it should be grown well away from other plants. It seems to inhibit the growth of many plants. Coriander (if such it be) is about the only plant which helps to control fennel. There are definitely some scientific reasons for all these things - some answers are already provided. I have heard that elder is a bad companion plant because the roots produce some substance or other which kills off competition plants - and I have found it true that nothing much...

There used to be a Knoxville Herb Society, but I don't think it exists now.

There are herb societies in Chattanooga (Chattanooga Area Herb Society) and Morristown (Garden Thyme Herb Society).

Some herbs can be found at many of our local plant sales here in Knoxville (See my "2010 East TN Plant Events Calendar" thread). The Garden Thyme Herb Society held a sale near the end of April last year, but I haven't seen any announcement for this year.

this is one of the best sales of the year! I went last year, stood in line to get in, met some nice people while I waited and got a boat load of great plants. I'm taking two ladies from my new garden Bible study with me. yes, my church has Sunday night focus groups and I started a garden group, eigtht ladies so far and we had a great time last Sunday.

paperart!! I am very excited about raising mealworms after reading your blog.My grandson has an Iguana,and those little bugger get expensive after 3 years.He is 9 .I think he would also enjoy it to.SOOO where can I get good worms without ordering them.

They range in prices from $1 on some of the plant members plants, up to $3, $5, $8, $10, and then some of the more ornate rosemary's and such can get on up there. I think the highest thing I saw there was a rosemary topiary for like $75, but it was huge, ornate, and just gorgeous. That was a few years ago. Some of the larger ones now are about $25-35. There is a range for everything...but most of the smaller sq. pot herbs are around $3-5. I've been every year except the 2 years my kids were born, stood and sat thru snow, rain, and gorgeous weather, and loved every minute of it!

Hey, Pat, a good source for a starter supply of meal worms is Exotic Pet Nutricion. Order the small ones, they will grow bigger. I bought some freeze dried ones a few weeks ago because my live ones were going through a period of more bugs than worms. My birds eat the freeze dried as well as the live and they were pretty cheap.
