Root a cutting of your favorite roses

If you've never rooted a cutting of your favorite older rose (don't do this with roses still under patent), it's a fun thing to do.

I've found some roses to be very easy such as Heritage, Mrs Dudley Cross, Reine des Violettes, Paul Neyron, Thomas Affleck, & Gruss an Aachen.

It's a beautiful, warm day to be off today ... 80F.

I can't believe you did that!!! Not sure whether to laugh or shake my head:) Of all the things you can do with roses, that would not have occurred to me.

80o huh, we've got 50 and rain finally here in the central valley of CA. Previous storms missed us.

Beautiful rose before the eye pic too, looks like tissue paper:)

I have my desert rose in a clay pot.. I do not water it until it is dry about an inch down. And cut back on water in winter. It is in a south window and gets lots of light in the winter. It goes out on my covered front facing south after all chance of frost is over. It loses some leaves in winter. I have had it for three or four years. I took a cutting alert it dry out on the end put in spot of regular miracle grow potting soil and it has started putting on leaves.. I would love to try planting from seeds.. My cutting even got water logged and started to turn mushy on the end and I cut it off jammed it back in soil and it started leafing out again. I think over watering is what kills most cactus roses.. I also fertilize with mirical grow and alter with blooms fertilizer in summer.

What taxonomist is saying is "he recommends hormodin". I have tried willow water, and it was a flop. I've had mixed success with powdered rooting horomone. My rosemary woody cuttings loved it. I have sped up rooting by putting another cutting in the same water as a plant that had rooted recently in the same water - it did seem to speed up the root formation of the cutting. So I can't say what happens scientifically, but I have had real world results with what you are interested in trying and I can say that it worked for me - I would say go for it! Danny

if interested i have multiflora var carnea. its believed to be a parent of seven sisters. i could have a rooted start for you by late summer. also looking at your wanted list, ill also will have holly hock seeds to. here is a picture of the multiflora var carnea last year alittle after full bloom. i can send you a picture of it in a week or two when its in full bloom. if you'd like. Ok, call me crazy, or reckless, but I've gone ogr nuts this year! (So send me to old rose rehab?) I have an indoor propagation system that seems to work well. There is still time to gather softwood cuttings and get them established. Here's my trade: Send me at least one, (ever better, two) varieties of OGR cuttings on my trade/want list and I will propagate your own ogr cutting of choice or alternately one that I can supply. When your cutting has developed roots I will carefully send it back to you. Incidentally I have access to Rugosa hybrids, including Belle Poitevine(my fav.), Snow Pavement(other fav.), Pink Pavement, Purple Pavement, White Pavement, Blanc Double de Coubert, Jens Monk and Delicata.

I think you showed it in the summer time.

Leslie, I'm glad you are finally getting rain there. We are expected to begin getting lots of rain over the next few days, and the temperature is expect to cool down considerably.

Bernice, Jackie of Ohio put that eye on my Heritage rose around Halloween. You are right, it is spooky.
It was actually June of this year that I began this rooting of Heritage. So, the cutting in the first picture above is now about 6 months old. I think by next spring, it will be ready to relocate. Right now I also have a cutting of Reine des Violettes that is doing nicely.

It's fun to root roses, when you can get them to do so! I don't have very good luck tho. I like the eyeball rose! That's pretty trippy! It looks like something out of as sci-fi movie!!

Beth, that eyeball photo is the stuff of a gardener's nightmare. But it is kind of funny. Glad it didn't gross you out too much.

I know what you mean about some roses being difficult to root. I like to stick with rooting the easy ones. I expected the old true tea roses (not hybrid teas) to be easy, and they are ... but some like Heritage & Reine des Violettes have surprised me by being easy too.

Your baby looks very healthy. I have never ever succeded in rooting a cutting. Sigh How do you do yours? The picture of Mama (without the eye) is gorgeous. The eye is not my cup of tea.
