Not-so-raised Raised Bed

Hi,

I just moved into a new house and the builders left a bunch of retaining wall bricks in the garage (these are the ones with the 3 holes). Instead of buying lumber and building a raised bed (which I've done 3 times), I wanted to see if I could use the bricks. The bricks are 2"x2"x8" and if I stagger them a little diagonally, I can raise the bed up 6~". I was also planning on double-digging and flipping over the sod, since I live in Houston and the soil is hard clay. :(

Is 6" high raised bed not high enough? I plan on growing more tomatoes, cukes, maybe eggplant, and some more okra.

Also, if i flip the sod and leave it in the bottom of the bed and put top soil and garden soil over it, how long will it take to decompose? In other words, how long should I wait to put the veggies in?
