Daylily Garden near Crossville TN

About 3 years ago when I was visiting Crossville someone on this forum told me about a daylily farm near Crossville where I could get daylilies for 2.oo per shovel. I went and bought 20 shovel fulls. Can you please tell me where it is again. I was living in Louisiana at the time and had to leave them all there when I moved to Cookeville.

This was a persons house that had a very large field of daylilies. They sold them for 2 dollars a shovel full.

Gee, I wonder how many pounds of batter, gallons of milk, pounds of butter and gallons of syrup we'd need for 400-600 pancakes? Ya know I was just thinking that I really don't have enough to do in the next five weeks and especially the day of the swap and was wondering what in the World I'm going to do with all that excess time on my hands. Maybe YOU would like to organize that for me! I REALLY do appreciate your interest in it and for bringing it up!!! Maybe you and I can discuss that at length in person on the 17th. Doug sayes that you are the QUEEEN of pancakes and would love to handle it for me. I heard that your moniker in Knox County is Mrs. Bec Butterworth and Aunt Jemima Holder. In the meantime... the park has a very nice restaurant that starts serving Breakfast at 7:00 am! There is also The Country Diner and Becky's Family Restaurant right up the road in Chapel Hill. Remember to tell them that you are with the MTPS and that in October Bec will be making pancakes for the MTPS and everyone in Maury & Marshall Counties at HHSP!

Hey Paperfinch, Welcome to the Tennessee Forum of Gardenweb. You're about three years late for this particular thread. Why don't you start a new thread and introduce yourself to everyone. Maybe you could tell us where you live (closest city, for instance) and what things you are most interested in. Many of us also do lots of seed exchanging, but often specialize in certain things. For instance, some participants may grow mostly vegetables, some annual or perennial flowers, and others (like me) more trees and woody plants. Gardenweb has a Seed Exchange Forum that works well for trading for seeds, but we'd still like to get to know you here too. As you may have seen, each third of Tennessee has their own Plant Swap. These are events that you should really really really try to attend if possible. I'm currently working to get the East Tennessee Plant Swap website at www.easttnplantswap.com up and going for people in east TN. The Middle Tennessee Plant Swap has a site at www.midtnplantswap.com. And, I think the West Tennessee people rely on this forum, currently, for announcements.

Well, there are only two genera I've personally never seen a deer touch: Narcissus and Helleborus. Both are highly toxic and American deer evidently have not adapted to eating them. Note that toxic to most animals is not necessarily toxic to deer -- Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia) used to often be called Sheepkill or Lambkill, as it would poison livestock when ingested. Deer browse it with impunity, however. Hellebores are shade plants anyway, so not a wise choice for your situation. But I'd sure put in a bunch of daffodils come fall. All that said, there are plants that deer avoid unless extremely hungry. In general, a plant that's hairy and/or aromatic and/or has milky sap is not high on their list of favorite foods. That means you could put in Rudbeckias ('Goldsturm', or R. fulgida v. fulgida, which blooms later and much longer than Goldsturm), Echinaceas (purpureas, pallida, paradoxa, the new 'Meadowbrites', etc), Amsonias (tabernaemontana, hubrichtii), Artemisia (look for a variety called 'Powis Castle', it does great around here), Asclepias (Buttlerfly Weed), Salvia greggii (hardy cultivars like 'Furman's Red'), Nepetas (x faassenii types, 'Six Hills Giant' is a nice one, as well as 'Auslese', which is shorter), Monarda fistulosa 'Claire Grace' (mildew resistant, clear lavender pink in summer and doesn't need much moisture), plus iris (I'd get rebloomers -- check out Iris City Garden's website) and daylilies, which deer seem to leave pretty much alone in my yard. They don't seem to mess with my dianthus, either, so you could get one or more of the D. gratianopolis varieties that performs well in our area. The three best that I know of are 'Bath's Pink', 'Itsaul White' and 'Firewitch', which you may find as 'Feuerhexe' (which means "firewitch" in Germany, where the plant originated.) The above list assumes your bed isn't irrigated, and that you're looking for herbaceous perennials. If you want shrub choices, let me know. I'm sure there are more choices in perennials than I've listed here, but that's a start. Marty

In Livingston , NW of Crossville ( about 35 minutes )
is Wrights Daylilly Farm on Terrapin Ridge Road and they have 1500 different varities. However , I would go to the Lowes in Crossville and ask the lady that works in the plants area , she might know..
also a greenhouse or two located in the crossville central business district might know also.
They are on the Street ( and down a bit ) that runs North to South where K-Marts ' side entrance' is located . Not the street facing K Mart ...that road goes out past KFC and Capt.D's and Sparta !

Thanks mountain_grown. The next time I am in Crossville I will ask. Sure wish this forum had arcives. I live in Cookeville and plan on visiting Wrights as soon as I can. I do remeber I had to cross a mountain and passed a place that was called Living Sea or something like that.

Betty: You mentioned that you wish there were archives. I have seen a site mentioned that might have these previous posts. I have not checked it out very much, so am not sure what can and can't be found, but know that there are at least some Gardenweb archives at http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.gardenweb.com

Betty, if you had to cross a Mountain and were close to the Living Sea, I bet you were closer to the Sweetwater area - down 75 South. If you went 40 east from Crossville, you would have crosed over the Plateau prior to heading down 75 South.

No , not I-75.
Once in Crossville , take US 127 south (main st.) right thru town and over the HILL pass the Hospital.
Stay on US 127 a few short miles and your in Homestead.
A village made of stone and a huge Y shaped intersection.
Bearing right , you continue on 127 so. and down off the plateau into the Sequatchie Valley of Pikeville,Dunlap,Signal Mt., Chattanooga area.
BUT , going left at Homestead will take you over the mountain into spring city and sweetwater.
Stop at the OLD GENERAL STORE in Homestead and ask them if they know about that place , very scenic and beautiful road to sweetwater and the lost sea....and so much faster than I-75.

Thanks so much!!! It was 127 and the house was right off the road that the living sea entrance was on. It was a good ways past it but the sign for the place was on that road. I tried the link for old post but did not find that post. I will keep trying though.
