NorCal Plumeria growers anywhere???
Comments (49)Hey all, I'm in Antioch & I've been growing plumerias successfully for almost 10 years. I have 2 excellent plants that were gifted to me by the professor of horticulture @ cal st. Hayward, unfortunately I forgot what they were. I recently bought a cutting from a plant sold as pops red, but actually was purple, can't wait for roots! One of my 2 from the professor just bloomed for the 1st time in 8 years......exciting times! I've noticed that soil is one of the key elements when growing plumeria. I usually use cactus mix, but decided to switch things up this time & mix my own. I used some fox farm happy frog, ocean forest, 1/8 & 3/4 in volcanic rock, & some moss I harvested. This mix is fast draining but still holds some moisture. Light is another vital part of growing healthy plumeria. I give my plumies all the sun they can get, & I'm rewarded with amazing color in my plants! A couple years ago I got a bad case of sunburn, down to the inner stalk, so I learned to cover my plumerias durring the really hot days. Plumeria love hot weather, I've noticed mine will gladly take heat in the hundreds. Unfortunately they don't like cold, so when the nights get below 45 degrees, it's time to bring them in the house. Watering, in my experience can range from weekly, to almost daily, depending on conditions. It was 106 for five or six days straight right before my plants bloomed this year so I was giving them water every day. I've noticed a bit of vertical leaf curl, not sure if its from water because my cactus mix is fast draining. Anyway, the colors are absolutely breathtaking this year! As far as rooting goes, I make a fresh cut at a 45 degree angle with a razor blade. Then I make a few verticals cuts with a potatoe peeler to provide more area for rooting. After that, I walk to the back yard & grab a fresh aloe stalk. I filet it and scoop all the gel out into a blender & add some water. I poor the mix into a bowl & add some fulvic acid, potassium silicate, & some blackstrap molasses. Then mix . Following that, I dip the fresh cut stalk into the mix. Some people like to use clonex or root tome, but I find this mix is far superior. I had some old root tone lying around so I threw it on for the heck of it. Finally I plant it in a clear plastic pot with holes drilled into the bottom. the clear plastic provides a humid enviornment for the roots, whereas the holes allow for oxygen & watering from the bottom. dont forget to add an egg under the stalk before you plant! Regarding fertalizer, I don't buy in to all the hype that a lot of plumie guys preach about fertalizers with high npk. These things not only kill the bacterial life in your soil, but also will lock up the nutrients over time! I mix fish emulsion, Jamaican bat guano, kelp meal, fulvic acid, & some black strap molasses (to feed all the hungry bacteria in my soil). Sometimes I switch it up & throw some potassium silicate in there. The npk of the mix, without the potassium, is about 10-12-20. I give them compost tea a few times a year & some enzyme tea once in a while. I fertalize once a week. This mix has worked very well for me! If any of you would like to get a look at my plants, check out my post, "Help with identification" on 7/9/13. The colors are really amazing this year! Hope my experience growing plumeria in the SF Bay Area is helpful to someone! Peace...See MoreHacker reading my emails
Comments (22)oh no what adblock are you using I had a hard time trying to remove an adblock for someone else, it was telling them the same message. We had to use REVO uninstaller to fully remove it. Please tell me exactly what adblock name is. This may be where some of your problem came from. Some of these are nothing but malware masquerading as adblockers. Comments (55)I have often wondered what phones are really worth. It seems incredible that they can charge that much and millions of people will stand in line to pay it, but they are rather remarkable tools. What used to be the size of a show box and plugged into your car and could call across town now fits in the palm of your hand, can call the far side of the globe and well as send text messages or emails anywhere on the globe, take better photos than were possible with typical digital cameras just a few years ago, search the web for a restaurant, change your plane reservation and plan your trip to both, play music for your ride and so much more. What was a frivilous and arrogant luxury is now a necessity. And the technology keeps moving so fast that it creates constant need. If we stopped buying them every year or two ( I suspect the average of all users is less than or at least not more than two years), then a slack in demand might bring the price down. But does anyone see that happening anytime soon? It is possible. I mean, how much more do we need in the palm of our hands, really? But not likely. I'm sure they are already working on the next carrots to be dangled in front of us and how to convince about half of us that we half to have it. What else can you think of that gets replaced by half of it's owners every year? As long as demand keeps up and technology keeps changing, I don't see prices going down. So what is this portable mini-computer, telephone, camera, and wireless connection to the world that, aside from the amount of data storage, does more than my laptop actually worth? Hellifino. ETA: If you keep a phone for two years, the cost is less than a dollar a day. Most folks spend more than that on coffee, soda or bottled water. Or a working water fountain, for that matter?...See MoreIs anybody out there?
Comments (102)Steph, I hope you are recovering well from your surgeries and that they went well for you. Eld, did I know you by another name? That was another thing that happened when Houzz took over - we did not know who we were talking to anymore! Steph, is MObound somebody I know by a different name, too? Here is the big bathroom done. I think you saw it already, Steph.Wheelchair accessible vanity I designed with pull-out storage in the left leg, a drawer, and shelf storage for the toilet area in the right leg. Wheelchair accessible shower. We took 8 to 12 inches from the bedroom nest door to get it this wide. Wood shelves where the old med cab was, and two new med cabs that hold all the stuff for grooming. The other end of the shower and the new cupboard. Because we moved the shower wall, the bedroom closet that sits behind the new cupboard became extra deep. So I stole some back to make a cupboard. The closet now has 12" deep shelves above the cupboard and behind the clothes hanging rods. I do upper and lower rods in my closets. We widened the bathroom door and three bedroom doors to 36", so two walls in the hall had to be moved to allow this. Those pictures come later, first I have ones of our bedroom. It still had wallpaper from the previous owners (blue striped at bottom, floral band at chair rail height, with textured white paper at top) and ratty blue carpet. Jim took that up, screwed the floor to stop squeaks, leveled the floor, and laid down this nice off-white cork for me. They stripped the wallpaper, fixed the walls, and painted. I had them install these lights over our closets so we could see our clothes better. The sconces are ceramic and painted with the trim paint. The lights are LED. The room door here got moved when widened. See the little jog-outs from the other two walls at the ends of the diagonal walls? The old walls came straight out from there, so that it formed a short wall going from the wall on the right, It met another short wall that started at the other end of the diagonal wall and came straight at us. The room door was on the side that faced the wall on the left of the picture. I had a small bookcase on the wall that would have faced us. So a big triangle about 3 ft x 3 ft was added to the interior of our bedroom This rug was one I bought for my "bachelorette" living room when I finished college at age 34, after being divorced. I had a pretty floral chintz sofa, rose swivel rocker and blue and cream plaid chair and this rug tied it all together. The sofa got old and worn and the rug got cleaned and put away for 15 years. I have always planned to bring it up from the basement and use it here, if we ever got our bedroom done. It fits well sideways and our bed sits on it under these windows. The bedroom that got made smaller is next to ours and it is now a violet color called "Plum's the Word" I am in the midst of setting that room up as my exercise and craft room. Here is part of that room when it was serving as our bedroom during renovations. This room also got the cork flooring. Here is a photo showing the new cork flooring up against the older linoleum that is in the rest of the house. Here are the doors! from left to right, bathroom pocket door, Plum Room door, our bedroom door, and linen closet door. We can't see the smallest bedroom's door that is to the left of the bathroom. That is a new light fixture. And finally, we have the bathroom door on the right, the smallest bedroom door in front of us, and the hall to the foyer. This bedroom lost a 3 ft x 3 ft triangle of space when the door got widened, This wall used to be perpendicular to the bathroom next to it. See the corner? Yes, when you enter my house, you leave the foyer and you either turn right to go toward the kitchen and family room, or you end up in the bedrooms. I can stand next to my bed and see the front door, now! There is a living room off the foyer that serves us as Bill's office/music room/library. So, these are the last of the renovations. Other than having a shed built, there is nothing left to do to my house!...See MoreGuy Shaviv
