protection for strawberries

I've built several 4'x4' beds for this spring and plan on putting in some strawberry plants. I like the simplicity of Mel's chicken-wire covers (though I may put hinges on them) but wanted to use some of the green vinyl coated fencing instead. Any opinions on what size openings to go with?

Are the 1"x2" openings in the vinyl coated fencing too large? Are the vinyl coated 1/4" hardware cloth openings too small for the pollinating insects?

Has anyone ever come across any galvanized lid hinges---the type that stay open such as may be found on a childs toybox?Any creative ideas you could share would be appreciated :-)

Thanks!
