Hi,

I just planted the first seeds in my SFG.

Here's my "box" made from free bricks.

So I first lined the bottom of the box with newspaper (free) to prevent weeds.

Next layer is 1" chicken wire to prevent the gopher, etc.

Then the layer of black weed-block cloth (free).

Then MelÂs mix.

The grids are made from the top row of the orange plastic netting (free); I didnÂt want material that would rot.

So far IÂve planted:

- 2 sq. mixed lettuce

- 2 sq. Baby carrots

- 1 sq. spinach

Then topped off w/ MelÂs cage to keep out the rabbits, deers, squirrels, my dog and 2 children.

What do you think?

IÂm pretty happy with how it all turned out. :)

Amanda - I think it looks great, and very creative! I bet it took alot of time getting the bricks level, too.

Ask someone you know that has a cat and buys their kitty litter in those 40lbs buckets if they can save you one, I'm sure they'd be more than willing to do so... They make the best "garden waste" buckets for the kitchen. Over winter I literally had five of them full with various amounts of already decomposing slop from kitchen scraps being thrown into them and the only time you noticed the nasty putrid smell is if you were to open one of them up. Emptied weekly, or even monthly, and you'll not have that problem - I just got wrapped up in work and didn't have an "active pile" going to toss them into. ---- Also, there's a lot more stuff in your house that's compostable besides kitchen scraps. Here's a short list of the things I throw into my "garden waste" buckets. Coffee grounds, coffee filters, dryer lint (not the fabric softener sheets, however), dust and dirt that I sweep up, hair - I have a dog, two cats and a wife that sheds worse than the lot of them, used paper-towels (as long as they're not "greasy"), kleenex and toilet-paper bits that end up in the bathroom trash, used toilet-paper and paper-towel cardboard rolls, I also had* (wifey just broke our 3rd one this year) a cross-cut shredder that is dedicated to shredding all paper that we receive in the mail that is non-glossy print. I rip the plastic out of the windows of envelopes and shred those as well. We also shred all used paper from "to-do lists" and other drawing/note paper that was used around the house. Really need to teach the wifey to stop jamming up & breaking the shredders though because they cost about $100 USD each...grr. I know some of you use the term "DH" but I should really use the term "DW" lol... I solicit my neighbors for all their yard trimmings and unwanted newspapers for my compost as well. Shredding newspaper for compost is typically done by tossing it in a 16 gallon bucket, filling it up with water and letting it sit for a day or two and then using a paddle-whip attachment on my cordless drill to turn it into a soupy slop. Brown, plain corregated cardboard can be processed the same way and serves as a good way to break down the glue that holds it together. ---- My goal is to have less than two 13-gallon bags of trash for the garbage man to pickup per month - or one every other week, depending on how you look at it...and we're pretty close as it is but I was vetoed on cloth diapers so that constitutes 80% of my current landfill contributions. :sigh:

Some notes on your herbs. Parsley is a biennial, so if you let it go through the winter, it will self seed the second year. Put it in a place you can give it some protection over the winter if you have many nights below 0*F. You will still be able to harvest it all winter. It will go to seed in mid spring the second year, and give you new seedlings in late summer or early fall. A shade cage in spring can keep the seeds in the same square without too much trouble. Sage, dill and basil are all tall herbs. Often a couple feet or more. The more you trim and harvest them the bushier and more dense they will become. I would suggest you flip them with your carrots next to the tomatoes so they don't shade out your other plants. All three are good for tomatoes as companion plants. They won't compete for surface root space too bad (not like the total root share of tomatoes and carrots, but not a big deal). But they will help to deter pests, and the dill will attract bees if you let it go to seed. If not the dill is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, and does seem to help the tomatoes in that realm. Oregano is a perennial in many areas. It is also low and spreading unless you have a hybrid bred for something else. Thyme is the same way. Both are a freaking pain to keep in a grid. If you can, those are two I would put in pots or somewhere else where they can creep all over and you don't have to hack at them constantly (harvesting leaves for use won't keep them confined, you have to cut back the new growth, which branches, etc.). Rosemary likes it dry, and can be a perennial if you bring it indoors for any temperature below freezing. I only grow my rosemary in pots because I can drown it if I put it in beds with my other herbs. A pot with both rosemary and thyme in it would do well, as the rosemary would grow up with semi-shallow roots, and the thyme would go over the edge with deep roots and keep the roots cool. Both need rather dry soil. Chamomile can naturalize and turn to a weed very quickly if you don't harvest the flowers. Plan to harvest very well when they are in bloom, or be aware of where it will drop seeds to keep it in control. BTW, chamomile and lettuce are in the same family, so you can use that as reference for companion planting. Unfortunately, aside from removing some herbs, you really shouldn't crowd these down any further than they are. If you use them and trim them regularly then they will bush out and fill that entire square foot easily.

ok - I think that last comment goes to rlkennerly having problems with the tomatoes - all of my plants amazingly surprised. I don't think my Popcorn containers :) were the saving grace as much as the fact that our boxes sat in a 70 degree, bright sunshine all during the day before it turned cold. rlkennerly - how low was your temp this past weekend? Ours hit 33 with some frost on the ground so I am surprised all my plants survived the 2 frosty nights we had here in Nor.Cen. Tx, and then again survived the quarter size hail and heavy rains we had Monday night. I'm really being tested, because now we are experiencing winds gusting at 40+ and my toms are thrashing about...I guess this is where having some better covers would help out... ...well I guess before it's too late and yet another act of nature tries to snap my plants - here's a picture of my toms/broccoli after the cold and hail/rain... From Square Foot Gardening And I'm gushing with pride over my seeds - that decided to pop out this morning to say 'we survived'!!!! In addition to this lettuce, also sprouting now: spinach, radishes and marigolds: From Square Foot Gardening And here's a little baby...tucked in ever so sweet...awwwhh so cute.... You should nail or staple the grid down, so those bricks aren't in your way when you're working in the garden.

Looks good for being so cheap though.

So the box is from the engineering side of me. Let's see if there's a gardener in there also. I'm not sure about that because my tomato seedlings are pretty sad looking...

I had some difficulty creating the box w/ the bricks. I've looked everywhere online for examples, but I couldn't find any. Either the files were missing or the search came up w/ bricks for the walk-ways.

I had to build it several times because the previous designs would be too weak (bricks would fall over, etc) or didn't line up correctly. Then when I was done, I had to rip it up again, because I didn't like how the ground (from the mulch) was sloped. So I even out the mulch and re-built the brick box ("brox").

Mel's message is about using what you have...so when I said FREE, that means I already had it on hand and didn't have to purchase them like I had to purchase the chicken wire and the vermiculite, etc.

Thanks for the idea about nailing down the grids. I'll tie them down to the base chicken wire. Right now, the cage is sitting on the grid edges nicely.

Now I'm waiting for the snap peas, which I have sitting on wet paper towels.
And getting ready to harden off the tomato seedlings.

I like it that the grids are removeable. I take mine off once everything is planted since I don't always use the sfg spacings. It then just looks nice and neat when I take off the grid. You can even store yours and pull it out when you need to plant again!

Check photobucket.com. Create an account (free). Put your digital pictures on your desktop. Where it says Upload Pictures and Video, click Choose Files, photobucket will browse to find them, select them and they will be uploaded to photobucket. Then you have to "copy" the HTML Code of the photo underneath the photo (starts with

Yay: my lettuce has sprouted!
I planted ~3 seeds per hole, so I have to thin them out tomorrow.

I love SFG: 2 little things are growing in 2 squares that I have not planted in, so they are weeds for sure. I'm plucking them before their roots get any bigger.

I'm hoping the snap peas sprout soon.
I had germinated them between 2 wet paper towels, and planted them when their little "tails" opened up. That was 4 days ago.
