some roses blooming despite the awful weather

I'm not really complaining - we really need the rain around here, it's not rained for us all summer - but it's not really been rain - just a steady drizzle! I cut some blooms before they started falling apart ... but some are also doing well on the plants ... I'm just enjoying everything right now cos soon there will be no more roses for a while.

this is what I brought inside

the blooms include - The Prince, English Sachet (badly eaten by snails), Cabana, Cologne, Bronze Star, Souviner d'un Ami, Black Magic, Sunday Lemonade (wow - soo fragrant!) Angel Face, Mr Lincoln and an unknown red that is so very fragrant either Chrysler Imperial or Oklahoma. This bunch is smelling up the entire house - delicious!

I wish I could smell your house right now! I brought two roses in, the only two I have that arent really fragrant, we had snow this morning . That is a gorgeous bouquet. Those minis are very cute. Thanks for sharing Aprille : )

At least you managed to pick a few blooms before it started to rain. I am hoping that when it clears up that the blooms that I pick for my kitchen table will look and smell as good as yours. Absolutely lovely and the blooms are HUGE!

I have a lot of things blooming. Mind you they don't last long and sometimes they look a little crispy. But they're blooming! Paradise, actually looks good Cherish, opens and drops Knockout, well that's kinda a given Angel Face, opens and wilts, lol Hot Cocoa, lasts pretty well but the edges crisp Iobelle, seems to like the heat as well as the cold Crimson Bouquet, a blooming machine Veterans' Honor, impervious to the heat Folklore, Gorgeous! Garden Party, lovely with a tad of the crisps Trump Card, Wow, looks great and hasn't crisped at all Home Run, eh, it's another kind of KO Zenaitta, polys seem to like the heat, covered in sprays Granada, opens and blows quick Golden Wings, tons of blooms but they wilt fast Dainty Bess, same as above Rose de Rescht, they're beautiful in the morning when she's in the shade, by afternoon they look literally melted Winter Sunset, another Buck like Iobelle that seems to laugh at the heat And two other Buck roses doing well in the heat are Rural Rhythm and Country Music. Funny that the roses supposedly bred for winter hardiness are all fairing so well in blistering heat and humidity. Golden Celebration, usually slow to open is just flying apart Julia Child is about to bloom so we'll see. The minis have more or less just shut down except for the micro, Cinderella! The other surprising thing is that even with the humidity so high I'm not having much problem with the roses balling. I don't have amy PM and very little black spot too! Although I did see some aphids this morning but since I was going to blast them all with some cold water to cool them off I figured that would take care of them.

Thanks all of you! Jean, Yep, it's crazy hot now. Have to water the pots sometimes twice a day. Sorry to hear your roses are frying. Most of mine seem to hold up real well. Some of the austins tend to get a little wilty. Beth, I DO think it's probably oregold too. Seems like it's more gold yellow than New Day. My daughter is 17 and actually is quite the artist. She loves pencil drawings. I came home from shopping and she had spent the day doing the pavers. Obviously VERY bored. LOL. Greenhaven, Your arrangement is GORGEOUS. I love bringing the roses inside to enjoy as well. And I agree...it's probably oregold. Kate, My ko's are absolute heat LOVERS. They are really pretty and in full bloom right now. I have close to 100 of them so deadheading is great fun! Especially when you have an OCD personality. LOL. As for the pavers...it was done when I got home but I thought it was totally cool. She is a great artist. I bought the mini at wally world and I THINK it was called Regina Palace. It is doing just great in the garden. I got another one named Gloria Palace and love them both.

Glorious to see roses blooming as I ponder the remains left after the recent partial snowmelt in my town after a trip to TX. A vole or some such rodent ate the roots off several roses leaving full bushes looking like all the other bushes but with the dirt mounds around the plants I investigated and found the rootless bushes. I did go back to the cemetery and took a few cuttings of the roses left. They have a new gardener who does the every bush in a circle thing with a hedgetrimmer and the roses look very sad after years of drought and no irrigation. I am busy rooting them. One bush is sure to die in the next few months. This is where I got the rose I think looks like Hume's blush. It is doing as well as can be expected with many long fresh canes. One rose looks like Duchesse de Brabant, it had a few blooms on it. Was interested to find that almost every nursery I have been to in the Dallas area carries either Chamblee's or ARE roses or both so there are more antique and the new "Earthkind" roses about. Wish our California nurseries carried more of the old varieties. Onj my trip this week I picked upa 'Madame Norbert Levavasseur' and a 'Jeanne D'Arc' at the local nursery in Irving for my daughter and brought a couple cuttings home with me. Both were from ARE. Fun Fun. So happy to see other's roses blooming. It is a treat!

Sunday Brunch is really scrumptious! Love to see that extreme purple of The Prince. Chrysler Imperial? is large and velvety. And I am surprised that I like Love - doesn't usually do anything for me - so good job! Oops, just went back to check and that's Snow Ruby, not Love. Very nice.

Char it's stopped raining here today - do you still have rain? There's hope for blooms yet - actually went around the front yard and picked a few roses for my MIL - our 4 year old spends Saturday nights with them when they can take her (in laws are taking care of their eldery parents who are well into their 90 so they are busy) and before we left today she wanted to take some roses for Grandma so "Grannie's house will smell nice like ours"

Carol - I'm really looking forward to what these two new mini's will do next year - I got about 15 or so mini's from Uncommon Rose (went through a depression when we did not move to Texas and compensated by buying more roses than I have room for!) I have Love - and it looks a lot like Snow Ruby - only bigger. I really like my reverse colours, got Love, Ronald Reagan & Snowfire too ...

Thank you Florence & Leslie. The garden is a work in progress, I'm adding Daylilies this year between the roses - looking forward to those results. I do enjoy strolling through the garden first thing in the morning with my cup of tea and saying good morning to my roses - checking who's blooming etc - my favourite part of the day.

Thanks Jen & Carol. the large orange rose is Sundance - no fragrance but it's a great cutting rose. the blooms last for ever on the plant and for over 7 days in a vase - the plant has finally passed it's 3 year mark this summer and this was the biggest flush I've had - there were over 20 roses on that plant.
