6 inches or 12 inches?

OK, so I realize that Mel says 6" and he's proven it works.

BUT... aesthetically, I just don't like the idea of 6". And I want to plant lots of longer carrots and tomatoes and I just think they need more than 6" in my climate.

Are there any negatives of using his mix 12" deep? Does it still stay loose and friable at that depth? He says to use 6" of sand and 6" of the Mel's mix, but I'm not crazy about that idea either and if I ever wanted to switch those beds over to lasagne it would be a bear to remove it all.

I realize I'm probably too new at this to be bucking the trend, but I just can't imagine that 6" is enough, and since I wanted taller boxes anyway is there any harm (other than the harm to my pocketbook, that is) in using 12"?

Thanks,

kristi
