sick tree?

I was wondering if you could help me understand if my tree is sick or why it is black in certain areas. I have attached a picture. It appears healthy in the canopy but I have seen some web worms on the bark recently. Thank you in advance for your response.

I don't know -- not an expert -- but would be helpful if you mentioned the type of tree

In Florida we get a lot of new pests from the port of Miami from shipment containers, etc. we learn how to deal with new pests a lot. About 2 years ago I bought Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub (Lowes or HD). It takes about 6 weeks to work down here, but once it gets into the root system, the pest is gone. It's great stuff. Note that we tried many other sprays and treatments, none worked. We basically thought of 70 plants were dead, but they came back even after losing their leaves.

It's a Celtis spp. affected with hackberry nipple gall. So common that I consider it to be the natural state of things...

hard to tell from so far away ... but all brown.. is usually dead ... you can wait until spring... to find out what does not grow in spring ... they are obviously alive up high ... whether or not to plant them.. really depends on what you want them to look like... if you like the weirder the better .. then go for it... they were a giant bargain ... lets see what happens .. plant them ... if you are a retentive type.. and they will drive you insane every time you look at them.. be done with them now ... they look like juniper.. they look horribly tortured by the seller ... usually they are bulletproof ... but for being such a large plant in a small pot ... no more fert.. they are NOT hungry ... ken

tree removal is highly location specific ... you would have the stump ground out... you do not bring in a backhoe and remove all the roots ... short of a lot of money ... you would not replant in the exact area ... just because it is really hard .. though i do not know about the root rot thing in your area ...i would defer to those above in that regard .... but that can be avoided ... by planting just about anything else .. beside an exact duplicate ... if you want a sitting area... in terms of instant gratification ... most likely.. its time for a pergola ... as the bottom line with trees.... there simply isnt much instant gratification ... https://www.google.com/search?q=pergola&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiY7cS4m5PKAhUBS2MKHZvHAJgQ_AUIBygB&biw=911&bih=745&dpr=0.9 all that said.. what is the pot with the irrigation tube... in the first and second pix??? ken
