Bush bean spacing question

The book said to plant 9 bush bean plants per square, I am considering what the back of the seed packet said is the spread of the plants and wondering if it is a good idea.

For anyone that plants bush beans, how do you space your bush beans?

According to mature spread. I have no idea what 'the book' states.

Go ahead and plant 9 like the square foot gardening book says.

The one problem you may run into is not enough air flow between the plants. If this becomes a problem, pull out a few. You'll have to try it out. Or, you may want to try planting 4 or 5, and then a week or two later, plant the rest. That way they won't mature all at once.

I always plant most things closer together than what the packet says.

My Dragon Tongue beans, which I'm growing for the first time this year, actually do have a slight buttery taste when cooked! I hadn't noticed that with other wax beans. For the most part, I'd say wax beans are somewhat milder in flavor, but, like the Dragon Tongues, can have subtle nuances in flavor which can be completely buried by strong spices or herbs. For beans cooked with Indian spices like cumin, coriander, hot pepper, etc., I find that green beans are better. Away from strong spices and herbs, though, green and wax can be used interchangeably. I like to have both.

Spacing of dry bush bean rows

Hi Dean, I plant bush beans in beds that are 3-1/2 feet wide. There are three rows per bed, spaced 12 inches apart. Beans that do a lot of branching such as "PI507984" are spaced 12 inches apart in the rows. In other words, 12 inches apart both ways. But one need only take a short drive through rural, even semi-rural, America to see that row planting in gardens is still very much alive and doing just fine, thank you very much. World-wide it is even more common and can be quite efficiently done depending on the space available. meserves - 1 foot between row may make access for picking difficult but as long as you can reach over both rows they should be fine. And while closer planting lets the plants support each other well, 3-4" is a bit over-crowded so I'd thin to 6" spacing. Next time you could stick with 6" spacing both ways. Dave

Thanks for the input. Sowed them about 3 to 4 inches apart roughly and separated rows 20 to 26 inches apart(my eyes are the tape measure). This is about a week and a half earlier than I usually plant and it's been low to mid 70s for a couple days and yesterday was 82 so the soil is around 65 to 75.. But in central WI they are projecting a warmer than usual late spring and summer.. I have milk jugs to cover the rows with if need be. It's about to rain or I would plant the cucerbits. Holding off on my toamto and pepper transplants another week as they are harder to replace than seeds. The types I am growing I can't just go get replacements at a box store

If this becomes a problem, pull out a few.

Or save yourself the waste of seed and time and water and instead space 6-8-10" first and obviate the need to kill something because of following a general guideline that doesn't pertain to everywhere and all varieties and skill levels and soil depths and etc.

I've planted bush beans 9/sf several times and they've done just fine. This year though, I'm going to try giving them a little more space and planting 4/sf or 6" spacing. I'm curious to see what, if any, difference it makes.

I have never grown bush beans and I was looking at pictures online at full grown plants and wondering if they would have enough space at 9/sq. ft. I will plant one square with 9 one with 4 and see what happens!!

I planted bush limas last year at 6/square foot and that seemed about right. I think 9 would be too close...Not sure if regular bush beans would be different than the limas...

But based on what else has been said here, 6 seems like a good compromise between 9 and 4. :)

I've planted my bush beans six inches apart. Out of about 100 bean plants last year, we got over 50 pounds of green beans.

Might not be a lot compared to some other folks on here, but I think that is pretty good.

I use raised beds and don't exactly fill one square with the same thing - I usually plant green beans around the perimeters of the raised beds and then corn, peppers, or something else in the middle that doesn't require picking as often.
