dianthus blooms have died, plants still healthy

Hi, I bought some beautiful, bi-color dianthus and planted in my garden, about a week ago. The blooms have died off, but the plants themselves still look healthy and sturdy. What should I do? I thought perhaps cutting back the tops might trigger regrowth of flowers, but I've not worked with this plant before.

Thanks, for any help or insight you can provide.

Just take your scissors, pruners, and cut back one third of the plant. It will bloom again. And, have a beer!!! I prefer Pina Coladas.

The older, taller plants were going full out and therefore more susceptible to frost. The seedlings were closer to the ground and just starting so they were a bit hardier - but they won't last long. As said, perfectly normal behavior for tender plants at the end of the season.

Cilantro is an annual - meaning it lives for only one growing season. Even here in the frozen north, cilantro never lasts longer than a few weeks before beginning to bolt. I have seen some unhappy annuals skip bolting and go straight to the end of their life cycle (in other words, dying). But you got more life out of your cilantro than many do! Direct sow some cilantro seed (aka coriander) in waves for best results and supply. They are very easy to grow from seed. FataMorgana

patreesh, 3 open today, taller plants, gorgeous, bigger, richer and better than last year, their first. So maybe the first year they bloom they haven't hit full stride. The only thing I've done is pull a couple of weeds and one watering with liquid kelp diluted properly earlier this season, foliar which drips down and some into the ground and very occasional watering when it gets really dry. Should NOT put liquid kelp on them now when it's so hot, at least foliar, will just let that go for now on those, want to catch the ones in the back if it cools down. I'm not worrying about mulch as much w/the lilies because other things need it much worse, but it probably helps in a number of ways. As would compost. They can go without water longer than most of my other plants. Something minor but a little unsightly compared to other things going on around here, something did damage the leaves some, light or gray, thinnish streaks about an inch or less, no idea what, plants look very healthy overall and leaves should be able to mfr & store enough for replenishing the bulbs over the winter. That was before I did the kelp. All the rain earlier may have upset the eco balance. Now it is suddenly too dry and hot out there.

Thanks everybody! Nah, Ron, I think the weather is making LYNN look a little different. Tammy, my TOM BROWN is not really a very big plant, even tho it was one of Cliff's "mother plants." It kinda died back a bit. It's doing ok tho, and I don't remember seeing any disease on it. I'm just so thrilled to finally have it after losing 2 plants from Vintage several yrs ago. I can't wait to see what it will do this yr. This spring and summer will be interesting to see how they come out. With last summer being the mildest I've ever seen here, and so far early winter being the mildest also, the plants are getting kind of confused. I just hope we don't get a big freeze out of nowhere, because there's still a LOT of roses opening up buds and blooms right now. I'll post some more pics soon...

Well, I have been deadheading, & deadheading, & deadheading, go figure. Mine are going to seed so I thought if I wanted another bloom I should deadhead. Am I wrong? Think I'll have a beer.

I am in the same boat! My dianthus were so pretty, and then suddenly all the blooms died, and I am wondering WHEN will they bloom again!?! I deadheaded a good bit, but still no noticeable results! I think I'll have a beer too! LOL. Any encouragement would be welcome.

Last year, I tried dianthus for the first time. They were so gorgeous all summer - they never stopped blooming. So, this year, I replaced the snapdragons I normally use for my "low annual hedge" with dianthus. I have a long row of it, about 20'. I sheared mine about 2 weeks ago when the blooming stopped (took about 2" off). Still waiting (with a beer in my hand) for signs of a rebloom; I'm thinking its back to snaps next year.

I have several different varieties of dianthus...my perennial ones put on quite a show early this spring, then kinda went blah when temps in the 90's rolled around. I cut them back all the way to the foliage in mid-June and now they are reblooming.
As far as my annual varieties, I just deadhead continuously and they finally let me know when they've had enough...that's when I leave enough of the dead flowers on it to collect seed for later.

...but I'll pass on the beer! :-)

I planted 60 perennial dianthus correctly in the sun and they were are bloomig. The blooms have stopped. What do I do to get them started blooming again. What do I do to make them blooms again the plant is heathly. thank you
