Gardening ideas for a preschooler?

Hello,

I'm new to this web site -- it seems great!

My question: I have an eager-to-garden preschooler. I also have a small container/window box garden (flowers in window boxes, veggies from flats in containers) on my roof deck in our city condo.

I should add, I'm a beginning and not-too-confident gardener.

Does anyone have any ideas for how I can involve my child in gardening? I'm not sure I want her to "help" me with the flowers as I'm a little uncertain myself.

But, I do want to encourage her interest.

Is it enough to have her "help" me plant the veggie flats? Should we start something together from seed?

Any ideas?

You can start with sowing seeds of bush beans. They're large seeds...easy to sow, fast to germinate and make beans that your toddler can eat raw or cooked. Bush beans will do great in containers but they must be kept well watered...expect that on very sunny days you'll need to add up to a gallon of water for a container the size of a five gallon bucket.

That's a terrific idea!

Do I start the beans in small cups and then transfer them to a larger container? Or, just plant them in the container from the start?

How many beans would you suggest that my child plant in one container (say, a 5-gallon container)?

I love the planting / eating idea!

I guess that depends on what type they are. If they are stocky enough to stand up on their own and be OK I'd just write something simple like 'Take me home, place in a pot with soil in a sunny place, water and watch me grow!' on the back of the tag make sure you say that it is an edible green bean - 60 days to harvest. Leave it at that. Putting too much info will make people nervous. If they think it's hard to take care of it might just get thrown away. KWIM? I can't tell you how many times I brought home sunflowers or corn starts only to have my Mother throw them out or not take care of them. LOL. Barbie

I'd add some compost before planting. And as far as what plants I'd probably due carrots, tomatoes, radish, and lettuce. Is the school open all summer? Because then you could grow watermellon and pumpkins and when they are small go out with the kids and with a neddle scratch their names into the pumpkins or watermellon and their names will grow with them. If you grow cucumbers you can slip a baby one into a coke bottle and let it grow to fill the jar. It becomes a puzzle for others to figure out how you got the huge cucumber into such a small opening. colleen

Jodi- I have gardened with my son-who is 7 now since he was old enough to be outside in the dirt. The thing I found to be most important was to make sure it was fun for them. Who cares if they put a plant in the wrong hole- you can always move it later when they are not looking. This has worked very well for me and now he is the one who asks me to go and work instead of me asking him. Also try giving them a small area of their own out of the way where they can do what they want to make it their own "garden space" Hope this helps you out Jack
