CD-ROMs that you can hear correct latin pronunciation of words.

I was hoping someone would know of a source that carried a pronunciation guide that I could look up the name and then listen to its correct latin pronunciation.Something like a verbal Advantage for saying plant names.I am somewhat familiar with the Horticopia CD sets but I think they are like $500 with alot of information that I already have in reference books.I really just want it for its pronunciation guide. Anyone know of any sources.Something in the range of $100 or less.Thanks Jim.

I have one I bought at Staples for less than $20. Actually I loaned it to my sister and will have to call her to get the name of it. : )

I didn't realize it had the pronunciation on it until I installed it. It's great!!

I finally caught my sister in and asked her for the name. it is from Sierra Home and the program is 'Garden Encyclopedia' (s)

I think Amazon has it or one of the book sites should.

Just to further refine things, it's the Greek "ch" that is always a hard "C". If the word is not derived from Greek, a "ch" might have a "ch" or even "sh" sound. The stress in a Latin or Latinized (as in Botanical Latin) word is not always on the second syllable (although you often find it IS on the second syllable in 4-syllable words. English speakers commonly want to stress the third syllable.) The stress falls on the syllable that is a "strong" syllable and is closest to the end of the word. A strong syllable has a long vowel or ends in a double consonant - which is why you want a Latin dictionary or some other reference work. Of course, there are some good resources out there, where you can simply check out the pronunciation of plant names and/or you can check out the rules of Botanical Latin, but these resources can and frequently do disagree with each other. So I say, learn something about Botanical Latin and learn to hear the common patterns people use when pronouncing plant names. Choose what sounds pleasant or makes sense to you and helps you to be understood.

Most people associated with horticulture that are familiar with the plant in question would pronounce it as cotoney-aster. But you have to remember that plant names are frequently an amalgamation of several languages. 'Botanical Latin' is mainly a written language and a particular name can in fact sometimes be a combination of Latin, Greek, English or French etc etc. Convention will often have a name said in a certain way but that doesn't necessarily mean there is a correct way. There is also a certain amount of 'snobberyÂ in certain areas of the 'horticultural world'. Botanical names can be a little irksome especially to those starting out in the plant world but they are a 'necessary pain in the backside' as common names can cause such confusion (for example bluebells in Scotland are a different plant to bluebells in England). Once you become familiar with botanical names they can tell you a great deal about a plant from the species, variety or cultivar name applied to it. I'd say enjoy your plants but don't get too bogged down with the 'correct pronunciation or the nomenclature' unless it is your profession. Cheers Jan

Wood - Glad you are enjoying the wonderful "Child/Forest" book. My library has the prettiest edition of this, and I donated the other two in the trilogy, but have a strong feeling they went into the FoL book sale instead of on the shelves which I had intended to make up the trilogy for other people. As for the adding of the "-ie" sound to words in English, that is quite common even now. "Brekkies" - breakfast "Sarnies" - sandwiches "Prezzies" - presents/gifts Also, there used to be a penchant for reducing some names to "-az" such as: Sharon --> Shaz or Shazzer Barry --> Baz or Bazzer Des --> Dezzie This might just be my group of friends though... We had a mixed bunch (social class speaking) and I think this shortening was a lower class trend... I could be mistaken as it may vary in other regions...

Some months ago I related a story where I went to a hardware store to buy a tarp. Rather than asking for a "Tarp", I used what I had learned as the proper name of the item: Tarpoleon (pronounced as rhyming with Napoleon) The clerk responded "I don't know what that is", I asked again for a "Tarp" and she directed me to the right location saying I've never heard that word before. I was posting that story here as an example of how little training workers in big-box hardware stores receive, and I was surprised to see the word "Tarpoleon" underlined with a red squiggle, so I looked up the word in another tab for the correct spelling, and found not only was my spelling incorrect, but the way I had been raised to pronounce it was also also simply wrong.

you really hit the nail on teh head with that question, because there are two systems of pronunciation taught: ecclesial LAtin and "scholastic" (actually German). Ecclesial LAtin is the way Latin was pronounced in the Church for two thousand years or so without a break; scholastic Latin is the way some German scholars pronounced it. So that rather than the v sound as we pronounce it in English and the way the Church pronounces it, they would change it to the Germanic w sound, which doesn't really exist in Latin. SO the famous statement by Caesar that they came, they saw and they conquered, becomes what falls on Church speakers' ears as the laughable "Weni, Widi, Weekee"

Is that more information than you really wanted? Then go to a courthouse and listen to the massacre of LAtin pronounciation there. When they adjourn without a new courtdate, they say in Latin "SINE DIE (without a date)" which is pronounced "seenay dee-aye", but which the lawyers and judges read as "sign die", but then lawyers and judges are gods.

it's easy:
pronounce
the letter a like ah as in father (Pater)
the letter e like a long a, as in bake (veni)
the letter i like a long e, as in see (vidi)
the letter o like a long o, as in oh (Noster)
the letter u like a long oo as in loon (uva)
there is no y, w, k. THe q is always followed by a u and pronounced kw as in quo. THe c is the most irregular,as it is for the church pronounciation soft in front of the i and e, as in civitatis (which word the Germans really mess up!)
All other consonants are as written. Just take each word one syllable at a time by these simple rules. Keep it simple.

Merriam-Webster at m-w.com has a free downloadable audio pronunciation which has many of the names we want in everyday life; I just checked and opuntia and bougainvillea are there.

It is a simple download as I recall, and easy to run e.g. just click and copy here, paste there and click the audio icon.

I have been using translate.google.com lately for almost all pronunciation problems. They have Latin pronunciations. I've no way of knowing how good they are. Latin bougainvillea sounds a lot like the French and English but the Vietnamese sounds like they struggle with it. Their Arabic just sounds like an error.

Firefox has an add-on that will take my word there with three left clicks, no copy/past stuff. I use a PC.
