What do you guys think of the SFG method?

I'm getting back into gardening after about a 5 year absence. I've built three 10ft x 4ft x 1ft raised beds. I definitely want to take an organic approach, and will need to plant somewhat intensively to supply a 4-person family, but I haven't decided yes or no on the square-foot-gardening method yet. What do you guys think of the SFG method? Do you think it really has advantages over just an intensive approach (I mean raised beds, no walking on the soil, close planting with no rows)? I guess I'm asking if dividing my beds into 1ft squares and treating each one separately with regard to seed sowing, soil amendments, feeding, watering, etc. is really a significant advantage. Wouldn't it be just as good to group plants according to light, water and nutritional needs without treating each square differently - and then being able to add compost to large portions of the bed and mix it in, maybe even using a small tiller?

Thanks
