Are there any plant swaps in the ABQ area?

Greetings,

I am new to the NE heights of ABQ. I was wondering if there are any organized plant swaps, and/or even any ambitious individual swappers (or wannabee swappers)in the area?

I might be interested in a plant swap. I go back and forth between Alb. and Las Cruces/ EP frequently, so I can obtain a lot of things that are hard to find here. I am mostly interseted in xeric plants, including desert adapted palm species.

The Los Altos Garden Club plant swap is scheduled for Apr 29th. Here's some info from the email: It's time to mark your calendar for the Spring Plant Exchange. The next exchange will be held on Saturday, April 29 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 noon in the Hillview Community Center parking lot (97 Hillview Avenue, off San Antonio Rd, Los Altos). Please bring your extra seedlings, plants, bulbs, cuttings and small shrubs and trees or anything else garden-related and take home something new in exchange. Please label all plants. If you don't know the name of the plant, list useful characteristics, e.g. flower color, sun or shade, water requirements. Please don't bring privet. We have found that it is usually left over at the end and we have to carry it away to the dumpster. You are welcome to post a note at the exchange saying you have some to give away in case someone wants it. This event is sponsored jointly by the Los Altos Recreation Department and the Garden Club of Los Altos . The exchange will be held rain or shine. Some useful information, especially if you haven't been before to the plant exchange in the past year: Please note that the exchange will start at 10AM and no plants should be taken before then. You must check in at the check-in table and make sure the plants you brought are labeled and set out before selecting plants. It is OK to do this starting at 9:45. Prior to 9:45 we will be setting up. If you come before 9:45 you are welcome to help us set up. If anyone would be willing to take a half hour shift at the check-in table please let me know. Please remember the rules: (1) Take in proportion to what you bring- if you only bring a few plants, take a few plants. (2) Share- take only one of each of type of plant and 2-3 of each type of cutting (unless there are huge numbers of them; ask the volunteers if in doubt) so other people can try them, too . At 11:45 you can take as much as you want of anything that is left. (3) Take what you have chosen to your car rather than collecting it in on the grass or concrete. If it is on the ground or the tables, we will assume it is still available. If you need help moving a large plant ask the volunteers. Suggestions: Bring some extra labels so if something you take isn't well labeled, you can label it yourself. Bring a deep cup with a little water in it in the cup holder of your car so you can put cuttings in it. if you have any additional useful suggestions, send them to me and I will try to add them to future emails. If you are interested in the Garden Club of Los Altos plant sale, it will be held on Tuesday April 25 from 11:30 AM to 12:45PM in the grassy area between the upper and lower parking lots of Christ Episcopal Church, 1040 Border Road, Los Altos. You don't have to be a member to come to the plant sale. Many interesting, less common plants are for sale. Please note that you may look but not pick up plants before 11:30.

I just answered your other post. I hosted the spring swap this year and will probably offer to host again next unless someone else wanted to. I have a bunch of things, mostly episcia's. I've got two or three that are diva plants and are requiring way too much time/effort, I'd like to get rid of them entirely. What do you have to trade? Not necessarily looking for more gesn, anything really. Lori

I don't know of any regularly scheduled plant swaps, but I'm sure we could whip something together. I'm not sure what I'd have avail. to swap until a little later in the season, like around early May-ish (?).

I have some boring "old stand-bys" like run of the mill iris or daylilies. Hopefully I'd also have something interesting like some passiflora, datura, jasmine, kiwi, or scented geraniums, but I'd need to take cuttings or sow some seeds to get some extra's started. Oh... I do have a TON of weeds to get rid of too :P esp. fox-tail grasses and wild onions!

OK, maybe we can try to get together in early May? Maybe at a park somewhere in town that is convenient to a lot of folks.

BTW, I have a TON of "Jupiter's Beard" = Centranthus ruber in my yard. It looks that it likes the climate here!!!! One is already blooming. I would like to find a white flowered one. If anyone wants some of these let me know. I need to make room for other plants.

Sounds good to me - I'll start potting things up and trying to get some starts going from my Spring trimmings. BTW, Tiguex Park (pron. Teegway - I think) near "Old Town" just re-opened after renovation. Dunno how central it is for everybody, but it's handy to Old Town, the museums, and I-40, hehe.

Potential plant swappers might be interested in this upcoming event (it's NOT a swap but who knows, it might be a way to get some interesting plants and maybe meet other swappers!). The Council of Albuquerque Garden Clubs is hosting their 30th annual Garden Fair and Plant Sale on Friday, April 28 from 12-3 and Saturday, April 29 from 9-4. I went to that plant sale today - ended up coming home with a couple hardy fuchsias and a penstemon. Glad I got there right at 9AM stuff sold quickly! Hope some of y'all made it and found something new for your garden :D

It was a great day for planting too with that rain last night and nice cool day today to get things in the ground.

I also went to the Garden Fair and Plant Sale in Albuquerque on Saturday... and came home with enough heirloom tomato plants to sink a battleship ;) I love growing tomatoes but this is ridiculous! I may have to open my own roadside produce stand in my front yard! (I'll give all you Southwestern forum members 50% off of tomatoes ;)
