Newbie; Need Advice on Ordering Dwarf Varieties of Fruit Trees

Hello:

I am very new to Gardenweb and to this Forum as well. I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, (to be more precise in N.E. Heights). I got this fruit/orchard bug for a while and so want to plant some fruit trees, peach,nectarine, cherry, and raspberries in my backyard. I have limited space and so had to use dwarf varieties. I read the NMSU article on fruit trees, its really good, but is not too enlightening on what dwarf varieties do well in this region. I have noticed several dwarf peach, nectarine and cherry trees around town and so want to seek some advice from experts on what types of fruit trees I should order. I previously planted a dwarf peach tree two years back and it did not produce anything for the first year and in the second year I realized it is a flowering peach :(

I used to buy my perennial plants and annuals etc. from Rowland's exclusively, any suggestions on what other sources are availabe or should I order them online?

HI! I am fairly new to the garden web also and have learned so much from info put on this site by other gardeners. I think you will enjoy it!! I find trees that I order from Stark Brothers to be top quality and they carry dwarf, semi-dwarf and standard size fruit trees. Check them out on line at www.starkbros.com. They also have a great catalog you can request. I have always received good products from them.

Thanks for the information. I heard mixed reviews about Stark Brothers, but now I feel a little more reassured to order from them. Once again, thanks for the info.

Nurseries do not have rootstock exclusives but Cummins carries much more of the Geneva rootstocks as it is a family nursery and Bob Cummins is the patriarch. He did much of the work at Cornell developing these root stocks. If you have good soil and irrigation M26 or similar sized stock would be fine for you if you want an easy to care for tree. They're vigorous enough to eventually stand without staking but don't require near the pruning of more vigorous stock and they bear fruit within 3 years.

Welcome Coach... great to see another Idahoan here (I also live near Boise). If you want to plant this year, it would be best to do it soon as the heat is on the way... If you are close to the city or suburbs, you will likely be fine with a single apple tree. There are crab apples EVERYWHERE and the pollen is compatible. The blossoms are just beginning to open right now. Are there any in your area? If you are unsure, you can plant two (must be different varieties which bloom at the same time). I planted two European pear trees this spring (Ubileen and Highland). I believe that the flowering pears will also pollinate the fruit trees, but I'm not sure on that one. We have a lot of ornamental pears in the area, which are almost at petal fall now. Again, if you plant two, get different varieties. I picked my two based on their ripening times, one in early August, the other in October (trying to spread out the fruit over several months). Most all peaches are self fertile, so you'll only need one. Many on here may disagree, but I'd pick varieties based on taste and ripening time more so than disease resistance. The disease pressure here is very low because of the rain-free bone dry summers, so fruit trees are fairly easy to grow. You'll have to fight a few insects and birds, but I don't know of any insect or bird resistant varieties. We generally have low insect pressure as well because of the cold winter and lack of humidity. Feel free to send me email if you have specific questions (like nursery rec's, etc).

one CAUTION ... foundation plantings should mean.. plantings to hide the foundation ... THAT DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE PLANTED ON OR NEAR THE FOUNDATION .... plant them as far away from your house foundation as possible ... i grew up in a pasture that was turned into suburbia in the late 50' ... by the 90's all the cute little bushes planted within 3 feet of the 'foundation' ... were taller than the houses ... those who had foresight.. removed them sooner ... other still remain .. and they make the whole neighborhood look like carp ... make big beds.. and place stock appropriately .. i know they will be tiny.. and sparse for a few years.. but in 10 years.. you wont be tearing them all out ... good luck ken as an example.... there is a tiny bed on the foundation ... then the sidewalk.. and the bigger plants exterior to the sidewalk ... another view ... i may regret that i left the rhodie there.. but it was the only ornamental on the 5 acres when i moved in .. and i was sure it would die... lol ... and i doubt the azelia will ever outgrow the spot in zone 5 ... the bed is 5 to 6 feet wide and another .... think outside the box..

Wow, resurrecting an old thread :) Many of the trees listed above are ultra tropical or tropical, not sub tropical. What's needed to grow mangosteen and cacoa is a whole different level than avocados and dragon fruit. I grow everything in fabric Root Pouch containers ranging from 15-45 gallon. Every kind of dwarf citrus does well in 15 gallon, as does tropical guava, dragon fruit, passion fruit, fig and a ton of others. I have my macadamia and avocados in 45 gallons. Macs won't fruit until they reach a certain age, which usually means they're no longer dwarfs. I keep my mac in a 4x4' area which isn't nearly as huge as they'll get. My avocados will be pruned when they get a certain size. Mango also does well in containers. Papaya can be grown in containers, though they can't be pruned and will need some space to grow. There's some dwarf varieties like TR Hovey. Cherimoya can be grown in a container. Just go for it and prune when they get too big :)

I am trying to develop a fruit orchard in Las Cruces. So far...am up to about 20 trees. I can't live without Asian Pears..so have a "bunch" (is this a pun?) of these. The Asians should (??) do well in AB. I am also trying Pluots, because these should do well here. In AB, like Cruces, you may have to be concerned about fruit trees that break bud very early in the season. I am a newbie to NM, but I would guess that AB may get a late frost, after warm days begin in late winter/early spring? Look for low-chill varieties..although you should have more choices, given the higher number of chill hours,..as opposed to Cruces. Try looking at Raintree Nursery's stock (raintreenursery.com), & Bay Laurel Nursery in CA (baylaurel.com ??..Google it..). I have bought fruit trees (largely...Asian Pears) from Raintree for over 20 years. I planted our first fruit trees in western WA, by driving over to Raintree. Some of Raintree's offerings will be chosen for their tolerance to the cool, wet summers of WA (as compared AB/LC). Some of the "berries" that you may want...may not produce well in AB..??? Many of the "cane fruits/berries, such as raspberries, like a colder/longer winter and less heat in the summer?
