Ads now with AUDIO

It just gets even MORE annoying to use the gardenweb. Now yesterday and today I start getting the ads with audio. Scared the crap out of me as I was reading the forums. Out of no where I get these audios. It's REALLY getting too much with the ads here. It's sad and pathetic. People can't even enjoy this site in piece without either a visual ad and/or audio now. iVillage you've really ruined this site.

My pop-up blocker is doing a great job stopping most of the ads, but an annoying M&M's ad comes through sometimes. What a great way to discourage me from buying M&M's! I won't buy them again, and have asked everyone I know not to buy them.

It seems like I get the "honey, where do you think apples come from" audio ad every time I click to read a thread! It is driving me bonkers. I have Firefox and a pop up blocker, but they seem useless against that ad. This site is getting progressively more annoying. This used to be the only garden forum site I visited. Now, I visit 3 others regularly. Not a one of them has pop ups OR audio ads. This site is being phased out of my repertoire.

Sorry this hit a nerve with some of you. Yes there are more significant issues to worry about. I look at it this way. The industry is already regulated in that the commercial isn't supposed to be louder than the loudest part of the TV program. All they have to do is tone it down- to the average decibel level of the program. If they are already monitoring the decibel level it might not be a big deal to continue to monitor it at a different level. There was a suggestion made that all we need to do to avoid the loud ads is to purchase a DVR and fast forward or use the remote to turn the volume down. Personally I don't find it very practical to sit there with a remote in my hand trying to avoid the commercials. My parents have enough trouble turning the TV on let alone utilizing a DVR and I'm sure they are not alone. It seems we are assaulted by noise everywhere we go. I don't find it unreasonable to try and control some of that cacophony in my own home.

Have you considered a pale grayish-blue or grayish-green on your kitchen wall? I think something like that would go well with the turquoise you love, the gray in your living room, the chair, and your cabinet and trim stain. Keep in mind you don't have to pick the exact shade and saturation of a color (for example a color in the chair) to have the wall color coordinate. Matching the saturation of any of those chair colors on a wall would probably overwhelm your space. I like to get paint chips I'm considering and put them next to other paint chips (of colors in adjoining rooms that are staying) and other important elements in the rooms and sort of play with them in different light conditions to see if I like them together before even getting the paint samples. When you find one that "sticks" and you get a sample, it might help if you paint a big piece of paper, or at least wider swatches on the wall up against the cabinets so you're not seeing so much bright green in between. I think it's hard to "see" a color when it's so small and surrounded by a competing bright color. It's helped me to identify things that I love and know I want to keep and decorate around, and use those things as inspiration and to "consult" for each decision (like choosing paint). If you love the chair, that could be one thing to inspire your palette along with the gray and turquoise. It's okay that the chair doesn't have gray or turquoise... It has black (which is essentially just the most saturated gray ;) ) and it has a blue that looks like (at least on my monitor) it coordinates with turquoise. Of course you also have to make sure your choices go with what's there and not changing for awhile (such as trim, cabinets, and couches). Don't get stuck on decorating around dish towels... unless you really love them and they're one of your inspirations! Anyway, not sure if this will help at all, but I've been where you are, overwhelmed and feeling like things will never come together. Reading the advice on this forum has helped me a lot in thinking about my own space and how to pull things together. But if your gut is saying the chair just isn't right, then I'd say listen to it. That's more important than any advice you can get from people looking at pictures and giving your opinions :) Good luck!!

First thing to do is check to see if this isn't an "intended" feature of this switch. A lot of the "smart" switches aren't really three-ways but rather a master and a remote controller.

Whatever color you pick for the house, paint the garage door the same color so it doesn’t jump out. A garage door is not a design feature. I really like your windows and trim. Handsome.

Carrie you need to get 3 extensions which will stop the ads:
NoScript
Adblock Plus
and
Adblock Filterset

I use firefox with those extensions and never see an ad like people complain about. Any questions about these extensions or using them just ask.

I agree with Carrie, I'm visiting this place less and less. Annoying = pain in the you know what. It's only a matter of time....

A pop up blocker for this...a pop up blocker for that. Download this, install that...for crying out loud!!

I've been coming to this site for 8 yrs and thoroughly enjoyed it until last year. So many knowledgable people have left that it's just not the same anymore. Some of the forums that I regularly visited have died. They've moved on to greener pastures. There is life after gardenweb!

The "new management" has made few improvements to the site while bombarding us with ads, banners and video's.

Do you have any idea how many people visit this site once and never come back because of the ads? They don't know about the "suggestions" forum or the "computer help" forum. They don't know about mozilla, firefox and opera. In my line of work I used to refer a lot of folks to gardenweb, mostly older folks. I don't anymore. It's almost like signing them up to recieve junk mail. Either that or I have to 1st educate them on how to get around the ads and I've grown weary of doing that.

That said, I don't see the ads unless I'm not logged on. I definitely would not visit this site otherwise...just as I don't visit any site that bombards me with ads and surveys. I make it a point to avoid products made by companies that produce "in your face" advertising.

I USED to drink Crystal iced tea but not anymore. Never again! I don't use any of the other products I've seen advertised here anyway.

FWIW, GardenWeb is now "part of the NBC family," according to Tamara from GardenWeb.

Bob414 - I installed all three. I still am getting that very same audio ad.

Perhaps those blockers only work with PC's(?). I have a Mac.

carrieb, read the fine print on the help pages and learn to block with wildcards. It is a pain. Seems curious that sites that depend upon adverts use adverts that drive you away from their site.

I have never used a Mac, but the extensions should work the same way with firefox on a Mac. I would have thought the ad was java script and noscript was blocking it for me. I have been on gardenweb almost every day since 1990 and have never seen nor heard an ad. Wish I had a better answer for you.

aka_peggy, if you only get the ads when you're not logged in, it seems you'd log in instead of ranting and raving about the ads. ivillage had a rough transition; ads were obnoxious for a while. But being logged in solves that problem now so what's your problem? Sandy
