Climbing Hydrangea

Just found this forum. Has anyone ever had a Climbing Hydrangea in zone 7/8, I live just on the line in Mississippi. If so what's the upside and downside of this plant?

I just saw my first photo of a climbing hydrangea, It was to die for. A friend of mine in Louisiana has just bought one. She is an avid gardener. I'll e-mail her and see if she can help you.

I grow and . Both are planted against trees. Both are pretty much carefree.

I tried the loop at the bottom of the bucket when I read the original comment. Did not work for me at all. Tried again - this time several branches/cuttings and still did not work. If it ever roots, please post. timothy_dobson, I do many hydrangea cutting and there is no fool proof methods of propagation. There are recommend techniques - some are easier than others but none are fool proof! I would suggest to check under the shrub - as suggested in previous comments and find a branch that has roots and use that one taking as much of the branch from the ground roots to the main plant. Curve these into a container and cover with soil. This may give you a better chance of striking more roots.

YES you may "clip off' the cutting that has rooted & transplant else where. Best time to take cuttings May/Julr Apply 0.8 IBA (rooting hormone) if cutting has not turned brown..... stick in well drained soil & miost expected rooting time 21-50 days

I have frequently attached a 4' trellis to the top of a fence as a line of sight sight screen. With a 4x8 you can increase the fence by 3 to 3.5' taller, and very economically cover 8'. A series of these could do your whole back fence. I attach them by predrilling to not crack trellis wood and using deck screws and electric screwdriver. A climbing hydrangea is slow growing at first. It gets quite woody, very large, and very heavy, like a Wisteria it might break a lighter to mid duty trellis. Honeysuckle 'Scentsation' or a smaller trumpet vine such as 'Indian Summer' may work better and survive in zone 5b (tbey are rated to 4). They drop their leaves, but might block quite well, except in winter. If this was my fence I'd pair Honeysuckle 'Scentsation' with Clematis 'Jackmanii' both have a long season and repeat blooming. That also gives you fragrance and hummingbird draw. The honeysuckle also has nice red berries late in the season for visual impact and the other birds. Both grow fast and together you should get enough vine growth to be a decent Winter block. Here's an internet photo of the in bloom appearance. The light colored honeysuckle really shows up in a twlight garden. And it does get woody too for that forest cottage look. I'm guessing this honeysuckle would cover about 20' linear. And one Clematis half of that? I've actually started this pair on my gazebo entrance.

Very similar in both appearance and habit. 'Moonlight' features rather fetching silvery colored and veined foliage in shade and is reportedly mild fragrant (not that I've noticed). It also blooms slightly later than the hydrangea. Both are slow to establish and bloom and both can get big and quite heavy.

I planted my climbing hydrangea three years ago. I have it trained to cover the pickets on a bridge. It has yet to bloom but the foliage is beautiful, hopefully it will bloom soon.

I have heard they are really beautiful and priced one at a nursery in Jackson, Ms but at 60 bucks a pop was too afraid to spend that on a first try. Does anyone know where else they can be purchased....mail order, internet?

I planted one (petiolaris) in very early spring against a wood fence in part shade. It came in a 6" pot and was about 6" tall. It has been a VERY slow starter and has now progressed about 10" up the fence. I'm told this is normal? Unless it really takes off in the next 6 weeks, I guess I'll have to wait for next summer. However, it seems very healthy, and I'm patient.

The hydrangea sticks with 'hold-fasts', and can mark brick or wood. They will go to about 30-40' if given support. I've seen them cover the side of a two story building. Keeping them off the windows can be a monthly chore. To keep them at a certain level requires repeated trimming.

They are gorgeous in bloom. And the bark is really cool looking, at least to me.

Hydrangea anomala petiolaris is notoriously slow to establish...taking a few years to do so. But...it's entirely worth it.

Hydrangea petiolaris does reasonably well in the South, but a superior vine for our heat is Schizophragma (also commonly known as climbing hydrangea). There are several varieties -- 'Moonlight' being the most popular. As someone above indicated, Decumaria is yet another vine that is sometimes referred to as a climbing hydrangea, & one that does very well in the South.
