Doing it by the book the first year

As I was lying in bed last night counting tomatoes jumping over cages to go to sleep, it dawned on me after reading some post in this forum, that many of you have improved, changed and turn SGF into a way of life.

I applaud all of you. HOWEVER....this will be my first year with SFG, after years of planting things and watching them die. This is particulary difficult after watching my father planting rocks and having them grow in the red clay soil of Mississippi.

So far I am planning on doing everything the way the book says to do it. I'm just not brave enough to be a hippie gardener at this point.

That being said, I'm curious about using carpet squares as mulch. If Mel suggest making a dish around each plant in order to water them, how exactly would that work with carpet squares?

I haven't made any decisions set in dried out peat moss yet, just the one question that seems counterintuative to his other advice.
