Poll: If you had an extra 2'x2' space, what would you put there?

...for experimentation; to pull something from crowding your other space; to have a little extra of your favorite; or just for fun.

If it were me I would try to get the bang for my buck by putting up a trellis and grow cherry tomatoes and cucs on the trellis and then some bush beans and carrots in the other 2 squares.

I'd say carrots because my 5 year old is a fiend for them. That said, I think I will have enough space for everything I want to plant now that I took out 44 SF of corn this year. Boy that opens up a ton of options...

Thanks, all. I'll try to answer some questions. First, it is just the two of us adults with no youngsters in the house, so no need for a kid zone separate from the main cooking area. We do not do heavy cooking and only 2-3 times per year will there be more than two cooks working in the kitchen at once. Also, this is essentially a budget reno with Ikea cabs, stone/quartz, backsplash all coming in at $10-12K. The galley layout is staying the same, with appliances staying where they are (except for relocation of the counter-top MW). The layout works great as-is. The long bank of cabinets has an indoor garden on the other side, so is essentially an open galley wall rather than an "island." There will be no seating/access on the opposite side. The wall opposite the large bank in the photo has a 30" range (staying) with 30" of cabs on either side and the fridge. The uppers will be gone. Two reach-in pantries flank that wall. Here is a photo that sort of shows it, absent the pantries: 1) trash pullout. I know this is a great idea for most folks, but we tend to push the garbage to maximum density. Also, we don't mind just pulling the can over to the counter for heavy prep needs. (Yuck, I know, but its how we work!). 2) Warming drawer - there is one in the range. 3) Second sink - I don't think it would get much use, and it would be essentially "next to" the main sink, albeit several feet away - a little odd?. There is a bar sink in the living area for emergencies, although it never gets used. 4) Drink Fridge - this is a strong contender, and would remain useful even if we eventually upgrade to a fridge not manufactured during the Eisenhower administration. There is also the possibility of locating this at the wet bar across the room, but it would be less prominent in the kitchen. *The fridge drawers are nifty, but I don't think the benefits would outweigh the cost for us. 5) Pet feeding center -- I hadn't thought of this. Dog food is now in a tub in a closet near the door (they eat outside). Cat food stays in the room where cat's dish and litter box are. A good idea, but I don't know that it would give us any real increased utility. 6) Cleaning product pullout -- all of this will be in the sink base and should fit there. 7) Extra 4-drawer stack. I've got one planned at the "junk" end of the kitchen, and there will be a lot of "top" drawers elsewhere, so I shouldn't need this. 8) Micro drawer -- this is probably the top contender if we decide to expand the budget a bit, It will get the MW off the counter and out of the pantry. _______________ Thanks so much for the input, fellow kitchen folk!

THANKS JSWEENC!!! Here are my pics and proposed layout.. thanks for the uploading lesson!!!! This is a big day! Let me try to walk you through what you are seeing: The living room, kitchen and dining room are currently three different levels. They will all be the level of the kitchen when this is done. The big thing surrounding the stove that separates the kitchen and living room won't be there. The wall above the current counters where the current fridge is will be windows. The window will be above the future sink and in between the new fridge and dishes cabinet (not the microwave as it says). The cabinets that separate the kitchen and dining room will be gone. Basically, everything you see will be gone. My main goal is to make everything one level and then to make everything less choppy and flow better. The drawing of the kitchen was just a first draft. Some things will change. The island will probably be 10x4 and perhaps the second island will be 8x3? (if you all still think there should be a second island after seeing the pictures). The laundry and pantry rooms will be flipped. When looking into the living room in pic #5, that back wall with the stripes won't be there. It will be floor to ceiling windows. Ignore all the furniture drawn into the living room sketch. The middle section will most likely be fairly empty and the end section will have seating for tv and conversation. I'm also thinking of making the second island movable incase a future owner would like to have a kitchen table there instead for an 'eat in' kitchen. But maybe you think our dining room is close enough to our kitchen for that not to be a potential issue. I'm definitely thinking of resale in this renovation. I'm thinking the perimeter cabinets will be white and the islands will be stained. The second island could be soapstone or whatever and the main island and perimeter counters will be calacutta marble. I'm envisioning the Refectory style from Christopher Peacock. It has a clean contemporary look that makes me think it will go with this house but it is also a traditional look that will hopefully warm up our home (just make it a little less funky). I have no idea what the second island will look like yet. The floor will be wood and the same floor throughout living room, kitchen and dining room. There are currently three surfaces. ANY feedback you have on these thoughts would be very welcome. Once I get a little further along, I'll be reposting my pics and layout in another thread to get my layout critiqued, so I apologize for the duplication in advance. I just didn't want to go further with the two island idea if everyone nixed it. Jsweenc, I will make sure to have seating at the first island because your point about people being closer while cooking is right on. Snowyshasta's islands were really something. Laxsupermom, thanks for showing me! The term continent made me laugh. Mairin, you and Amck's point about the island working if they made sense with the house is great. I like more traditional things and our house is contemporary so I always have to fight my urges. I will definitely post the sketches of the proposed islands once I get that far. It is so useful to get so many sets of eyes on the projects. I love reading everyone's comments on proposed layouts because I learn so much. I'm not good at visualizing outside of the box. Igloochic, our kitchens are similar sizes. Do you have pics of your proposed islands by chance.

That is exactly why I have done nothing yet Amy. I love the Parrish prints and they are smaller in size and I don't want to overpower them. I should have mentioned that was my second choice. Putting the larger daybreak centered over the bed and then splitting the two from my side of the bed on either side. The prints are the old ones from the 20's and the frames and glass are pretty heavy. DH wasn't very happy with that option either. While they didnt have the points of the iron piece, They still could do a number on you if they fell. He suggested a poster. I wasnt thrilled with that either. I found some canvas "prints" but they are about $120 each. For about $80 more I could get more original prints in frames from the 20's (of course if they came up at our local auction house) and I can't see spending that much money on a canvas print. That pillow idea is very pretty. I hadn't thought of curtain like fabric hung either. That might work. I think Fabric barn is having another holiday sale. I do have larger lamps I could use but put the smaller ones here so they didnt block the prints. It's just not working. I have been looking on CL for a king bed frame and no such luck so far. Msrose they are from ebay. I will try to post a link to the seller. They have good feedback and the groupings range in price from $50-$150 Here is a link that might be useful: ebay seller

No heat in a basement in Chicago. That's brave. Here is my issue. The heating coils/wires/mats will heat the flooring nicely but it will heat the EARTH much more. Do you have plans regarding insulation UNDERNEATH the heating elements? You will want to figure this part out or else you will be loosing 50%-80% of the heat to the earth (we call this a heat sink...because heat sinks into and never comes out). The tiny bit left will enter the tiles. Your energy bills will skyrocket if you do not insulation UNDERNEATH the heat. This insulation will add $$$$ to the installation bill. Once you have seen the cost of this as a TOTAL price, you will realize it might be faster, cheaper, easier to add baseboard heaters to the space and use the vinyl planks you want. Or cork floating flooring + cork underlayment + a baseboard heat = super warm, quiet, fast, cheap(er) project. I often see installation for the heating coils/mats/tubes come in around $15 - $25/sf. And then you have to level the space...and add the cost of the insulation UNDERNEATH the heating...and then you have to purchase the flooring...have it installed, etc. This gets very expensive very, very quickly.

I actually had an extra 2x2 box. I put my onions in it because they'll be there until the next ice age in comparison to the other plants that can rotate with seasons.

I'd plant whatever it is you love the most from the garden, and you think tastes the best fresh. For example, I love fresh green beans tossed in oil and garlic, salt and pepper and stir fried for just enough to cook them but keep them somewhat crunchy. My wife will not eat them, only likes green beans out of the can. Same thing with garden peas, she won't eat them unless they are out of a can. So it does not do them justice to put extra in that space because only I will be eating them.

That being said, I'd agree with Jeremy. Tomatoes are the one crop that I really look forward to all year long. To get a big red tomato that just oozes juice out, slice it up and put some salt on it.....my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

lol, I REALLY need another 2x2. Kids down the street invited a few friends to MY house and they all want to grow stuff here, too. The two girls want to grow a watermelon. If they bring anymore friends over here, I'm going to have to politely, but firmly tell them to ask their parents for yard space. Go to my website and tell me you could say no to my garden invaders! They are too pickin' adorable.

It would depend on my mood.

A nice little 2x2? I'd put in strawberries, built up like a tier as someone here has done. Boxes inside of boxes, progressively getting smaller as you go up.

Either that or bodies. (snicker)

A hot pepper for me & some carrots, little 'Thumbelina' for a snack after coming home from kindergarten or right out of the garden, maybe some 'Purple Haze' for guests.

Lets see I'd start by planting two tomatoes and then when nobody was looking I'd plant another and then well one more couldn't hurt right? Thats whats happening to the rest of my sfg it started out with a plan calling for two tomatoes and two in containers now I'm up to 4 in containers and 10 in the ground I havn't even started seeds yet. yikes I hope I won't plant only tomatoes!

Hmm. That's a tuffy. I'm starting to build my box right now and I would have to say that and extra 2x2 of space sounds really good. I would have to say lots of carrot varieties that are heat tolerant so I can grow them year round! :) Now to convince hubby to let me get a juicer.... mmmm carrot juice...

Like so many others have said, TOMATOES, 4 varieties that did not fit in. I never have the room for all the varieties I want to grow, just love picking 5 or 6 different cherry tomatoes to put into a salad, different colors, different shapes, so delicious.

If it were me (im in a wheelchair) id would use The "Gro-Eze" Telescopic Vertical Garden Tower System made by the Spud Eeze Corporation, you can plant 18 plants on the side and the top also has aprox 3 square feet more to plant in. Wow i had the BIGGEST CROP EVER IN MY 2 X 2 space. My Herbs were great on the side and i planted a Cherry tomato and 2 basil on the top along with 1 hot pepper plant. the top was a little tight but it worked great. It was easy to pick and take care of. Thanx a million.

The makings for gazpacho - tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, cilantro or parsley. When ripe, chop and toss with olive oil and lemon juice. Yum,Yum,Yum.
