Beautiful. I can't wait for SA to bloom. Somehow, my SA leaves look unremarkable compare to my other roses that look glossy green.

Thanks Jumbojimmy.

I know what you mean about the leaves - they are more leathery and light green than my other roses too. I kind of overlook that because it puts on a marvelous show most of the summer.

Here is a pic that shows a little more of the entire plant.....even the 'ho-hum' leaves. : )

I have a potted Princess Alexandra and have been very pleased with it. It is an excellent grower and I really like the blooms. I am making a trip to Chamblees and think Sharifa Asma would be perfect, so plan to get one. I put Pink Peace elsewhere, so that's out of the mix. I may include some noisettes or pink polyanthas in amongst these. I wasn't crazy about Miss Alice, too small for this bed, so do have it growing in a pot, which it seems to like. I had an Englands Rose which I liked very much, but after summer hit [and in Texas, the heat isn't for sissies], it declined and finally died this year. I think it would do well with afternoon shade, which that bed didn't get. Sister Elizabeth isn't thrilling me in this spot - I am beginning to realize that many of the Austins, at least for me, just don't thrive in all day sun in our Texas heat - I have a spot behind my horse barn that gets shade after 2 or 3pm - they seem to like it better there. I am rethinking where I put these roses, and may move Sister Elizabeth back there later in the fall. No photos yet, but will post some when I get them. I do appreciate all the advice! Judith

Rosecanadian, male dogs are definitely silly, especially with their excessive marking habits. Of all the bushes and shrubs in my garden, he has to pick a fragrant rose to piss on, on the same spot, several times a day. I have given up following him around trying to catch him spraying on Sharifa, and resort to hose sharifa down then shake her foliage to get rid of excess water droplets. I do love dogs in general, and mine is just a big softie. so gotta forgive him.

Another fun comparison: Left: RU, Distant Thunder, Own Root, I’ve had it about 1 month. This plant had the thinnest stems of the three, also had smaller root ball than the K&M. Very healthy, put out a lot of new growth Middle: Wayside, Molineaux, Bare Root, Dr Huey, also had it about a month. By far the thickest stems, but of course being bare root had to grow new feeder roots. Good progress, there’s even a bud. Right: K&M, Buxom Beauty ,Fortuniana, just arrived today. Thicker stems than the RU rose, also had a very dense rootball. Was trimmed short significantly to fit in packing box so most of the mature foliage is gone, but lots of new growth remains, even 2 buds. I’m very happy with all three providers, and thankful that I’m able to get hard-to-find varities in mid summer in great health!

Whoa ... your 'Sharifa Asma' is fine!
And thanks for posting the bush shot of it too.
I'll take those leathery, mat-green leaves over glossy hybrid-tea leaves any day. Looks much more natural to me.

WOW, Sharifa Asma is gorgeous, so is QE too,My Queen Elizabeth had some gorgeous blooms in the spring and early summer,but now they little tiny blooms and looks more like a single bloom.

Jumbojimmy - I have no experience with rose virus. I've been lucky that I've never had any diseased roses. I usually buy from Pickering Nurseries and haven't had a problem. Hopefully one of the other members can give you a clear diagnosis.

Sam - how interesting! I never knew there were two forms.

This is my first year with QE. I ripped apart the entire bed this spring and started from scratch. Rugosa Roses are tough cookies....UGH

At the bottom left is Lillian Austin with QE in the centre surrounded by 'bed eating' portulaca. Who knew a couple of puny little annuals they got THAT big!!! YIKES

Sharifa Asma is my favourite fragrant Austin. I love it. I really do not mind the leaves either. They may be a little course, but they are dense making a great foil for the roses. Would rather have that than a sparsly leafed rose, like Belle Story. lovely blooms, but pathetic foliage.

Sam, except for Climbing Queen Elizabeth, I believed there was only one other. In north America, called a grandiflora and I believe Britain calls it a HT and other places known as a florabunda. I coud be wrong, but this was what I have always thought. Puzzled????

My Queen Elizabeth grows like corn stalks. Mine isn't a climber. I am 6'2" and I don't have to bend to sniff it. LOL

Sharifa Asma is one of my favorites, beautiful pics.

JumboJimmy, I have a rose with similar markings, and have learned that nutrient imbalance can cause those type of markings.

Same here Sam. I am not even 5'2" so get a stepping stool to deadhead QE she is 8'-9' for sure here. Stately lady. Moved her from our deer ridden front to our deer-proof back yard. Could not believe the height she put on this year.

I think those yellow marks are caused by insects(moths,thrips) instead of a virus.

Sharifa Asma and Falstaff are showing signs of powdery mildew. Hopefully this milk-mixed-in-water helps solve the problem.

I can't stop drooling over those sharifa asma photos. Hope mine ended up that beautiful.
