Gardening in Shade

Plants to ST. Louis area, advice

I am wondering if anyone from the St. Louis area could advise me? My brother just bought a new home and needs plant help. I have never seen his yard. I have a MN SHADE garden. He tells me his yard is mostly shade. I offered him some plants. He is planning a trip up here in a few weeks. I want to send home with him as many hosta, etc as his car will hold. I have many many other shade plants. Are there any I should NOT give him? Which would grow the best for him? Should I stick to a variety of hosta? I compared hardiness zones, but that only told me what I already knew. He has a longer growing season than I. What would you all suggest? I already plan to stay away from my woodland MN plants.

I am from the St. Louis area. Hostas do very well here. Not knowing what else you have in the garden to send home with him to advise you on, here is a local nursey's webpage with the plants they offer for this zone. Maybe you can look up a few of the plants that you have to offer to your brother against what they sell for this area?

That is a great idea! Thank-you. So far I have a bleeding heart,perennial geranium, ostrich fern, a couple of ground covers (creeping jenny,ajuga,and a vine) Jacob's ladder,columbine,and a few others.
I can't send along astilbe as they are blooming right now.

The link below is what came up when I searched the Missouri Botanical Gardens website for vegetables. There are a few articles there that might help you. I noticed they have a vegetable garden called the Bank of America garden where they have planted vegetable varieties that do well in the St. Louis area. I doubt that would be much to see right now but it would be a good place to visit this summer. I'm in southwest Missouri. Our Master Gardener society here has a public display garden that includes a vegetable garden. There may be something similar there and they should have a hotline number that you can call. The master gardeners volunteer to answer questions. The website for the one in your area is stlmg.com. Gardenweb has a forum for Midwest Gardening. Hi, Has anything come about with this exchange? I'd sure like to get together with some other gardeners. Welcome KJ! Although I've seen maps that show that the Ozarks region stretches up almost to St. Louis, we rarely have someone post from that area in this forum. There's a forum for gardening in the Midwest. You may want post a question there to find other gardeners in the St. Louis area but I will warn you - It's not a very active forum. The information that you find in the Ozarks forum will still be very helpful to you and you're certainly welcome to join in. St. Louis is in zone six like southwest Missouri isn't it? So our winter low temperatures should be similar and I'm sure your summers are hot like ours as well. It took me awhile to figure out that zone six gardeners along the coast have much milder summers and some of the plants they recommend can't stand our summer heat here. I think there's a display vegetable garden at Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis. Here's a link but it doesn't tell very much about it.
