How would you turn this patio into a garden courtyard?
Comments (26)Yes, I'm in Florida. But I was reflecting on my same behavior as when in Georgia. Hmmmm... "finest paint"...? The trouble with assessing such a thing personally is that no one can run "clinical" trials with controls in the home setting. And there a lot of variables. Back when I was doing some house renovation and needing a lot of paint, a Consumer Reports study led me to Valspar paint (sold at Lowe'es) as one of the higher performing brands. (I also use gloss which holds up better than other sheens.) Being a creature of habit, I stick with it. That was a few years back and things could have changed so I don't know how it would shake out now. Maybe someone subscribing to Consumer Reports can update...?...See MoreNew Orleans look/feel
Comments (4)lynnmarie, have you thought about staining or stamped concrete on your patio? There are all sorts of designs and colors out there that resemble what you are looking for. I agree with all of louisiana gal's suggestions. I have most of her suggestions in my post-Katrina yard, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, with the exception of gingers. I don't think I have enough shade for them, but absolutely adore them! I might have to give them a try. Also agree about a fountain. We had one installed in the spring and love the look and sound of it. So soothing, especially in this dreadful heat. In our courtyard, we have three vitex/chaste trees, strategically planted in the corners. Virtually maintenance free, so far. Beautiful purple/lavender blooms and pretty bark. Although it's really not very "glamorous", I also like the Confederate Rose. Maybe because I'm so excited about mine that I planted a little over a year ago. It is so big this year and will be blooming in the next month or so, hopefully. Anyhow, good luck and have fun with creating your New Orleans-styled backyard!...See MoreNew Orleans & southern Louisiana
Comments (6)Yes, we love New Orleans too. I suggest anyone going for the first time, to take some kind of tour. This will give you an overview of the city. We took a carriage ride through the French Quarter and also a cemetary tour. That way you really can understand the history and the locations of many of the sights. The street car is a wonderful way to get around the town. I remember well the scent of jasmine. The gardens that we saw were lovely and so different from the midwest. The only problem was the heat. We usually go either in February or early March to avoid the heat that can make you not want to get out and walk much. A great town....See MoreTall (15 ft +), Fast-growing courtyard/patio plant (Louisiana)
Comments (13)I've got bamboo that will take years to kill. I'd never recommend it to anyone, regardless of what type it is. Look up Native plants to your area and go with those. You won't have to water after you get it started. There are some good evergreens that may not grow as fast as you like, but they won't be as weak wooded either. You don't want anything coming down close to your house in the future. Just check it out is all I'm suggested. Good luck....See Moreoreos_mom
