Looking for garden club programs.

Hi,

I have recently been appointed as the garden club president for my city's garden club. At this time I have a number of ideas for programs but would also like to hear from you. What have you attended or taught that really was well received by the audience? What were the "duds"? Our presenters only get about 20-25 minutes to deliver the program. I am also interested in field trips, make and takes for the garden. Thanks for any ideas you have to offer.

Recommendations on trips depend where you are located.

The Master gardener program members must do presentations as part of their training. These can range from I am only here to get points or very interesting. I would suggest that you plan your speakers so that they will speak a month or two in advance of their topic. New plants should be January/February. Fall clean up and composting September. Planting vegetable or flower gardens can be in three parts, cool weather veggies and flowers, summer blooming or bearing, fall gardening. Herbs are always popular although there are many people that sell or produce herbal products try to stick to planting and growing herb plants. For this there could be a grower in the area that may only do one herb such as lavender.

Although it is expensive a field trip to several nurseries in the area can be great fun.

Plan on a service program for members and their families. Could be getting permission from your city to do plantings arround signs or doing plantings at any community center or public building. Nursing homes can use a lift with a few planters for the doorways. Try to find a place that will donate the plants and bedding materials. Your club should follow up with weeding and maintainence.

If you are desperate, you can have a getting to know you night. This is where you hand out at random stickers, cards, bits of paper with orchid Genera Names written on them and arrange your society experts to meet at the appropriate places at the monthly benching to discuss culture etc. of the nominated Genera. I thought it would be a disaster but it always seems to go well and it is a way of getting Novice members to talk to the Open Class growers. Of course how you "Divide up the Benching" to get appropriate sized groups depends on the Number of people you get at a meeting. If you had more time you could arrange a lucky dip night ... that is where you buy an appropriate number of "your choice" mixed Genera Orchids from a reliable vendor. Then sell them to the members at or slightly below cost. Of course, you will need a swap table/point where members can meet to swap something they get that they do not love.

looking for begonia speaker for garden club meeting in waterville

We have been trying to find someone to speak at our May 5 or June 2nd garden club meeting in Waterville Maine. Is there anyone out there with an interest to presenting a program on begonias. The club meets at 6:00 in the evening and the talks run from 40 minutes to an hour.

I have no first-hand knowledge of most of these groups, but here's what I find online: Garden Thyme Herb Society - no official contact info online. If you're interested, contact GardenWeb member evasage for more email. You should be able to email her through her GardenWeb member page. Eva's super nice and might also be able to tell you about other local groups. Ken-Ten Iris Association (Dresden, TN / Earnie Royal, president / 270-489-2819) - local American Iris Society group I can hardly believe that the Tri-Cities doesn't have an AIS club in that area, but it appears that this one is the closest. If you are into iris, you might consider starting a club in the Tri-Cities area. I bet there'd be plenty of interest. Mid-Appalachian Bonsai Kai (Kingsport / Anita Bausman at 423-239-7602) - local American Bonsai Society group Tri-Cities Daylily Society (Kingsport, TN / Dennis Hall, president at 423-288-7040) - local American Hemerocallis Society group Shady Oaks Garden Club (Johnson City, TN / Cindy Hintz at 423-282-9106) _________________________ I didn't see any local groups associated with these groups, but you might consider starting one: African Violet Society of America American Daffodil Society American Hosta Society American Rose Society Cactus and Succulent Society of America wildflower groups _________________________ There are also other groups that are somewhat associated with plants and gardening, like: Bays Mountain Park Association Bristol Bird Club Friends of Roan Mountain _________________________ And, of course, you are cordially invited to attend the East Tennessee Plant Swaps. Look for info in this GardenWeb Forum closer to swap time (usually one in spring and one in fall).

I recently joined a local garden club in Maryland and if you email me, I could give you a list of what the programs are that are planned for this year. Have you tried to google Garden Clubs for your local area. I think Garden Clubs have to be registered with a county registery or state. That's how I found our garden club. We have about 70 members and it's a nice group and not a snobbish, social climbing garden club. We even have about 10 or 12 men in the club. I think maybe most of them might have a landscaping business on the side or just enjoy gardening and one can learn a lot from them.
