My babies are doing great! 30 lupines are growing great. 3 types of tomato plants getting put into deeper pots now - I bury the entire stalk when replanting so it grows more roots and gets stronger, more seed varieties to be planted. 3 romaine lettuce from very old seeds, planting fresh seeds next week. Whole tray of salad lettuce leaves popped up after a week. It's for indoor windowsill. I'll winter sow some too for later. Onions and chives. I have some pepper seeds, rosemary and cilantro on my heated tray mat - so I'm waiting to see them start. Cat grass (aka OATS - oat seed is cheaper) for my fur ball Andy. Still working on getting my flowers winter sown. And of course I'm still trading seeds (I have to fess up - I'm an addict!) That's about where I'm at now. More to report in a week. Hi there, I dont have Âmaureen but do have taxus media ÂhicksiiÂ. North side of the house, no winter sun, but heavily wrapped for winter. ItÂs done quite well. But, seeing that itÂs zone 3 and this is a zone 4 plant, I find that sometimes even using regular burlap isnÂt enough. Sometimes the pointy Âneedles stick through the burlap and winter burn. For this reason I have used a thick wool blanket. This year I got a huge box and am trying that method. I didnÂt winter mulch, but I do ensure lots of snow is piled around the plant. But thatÂs here zone 2b/3 and I know I will always have to wrap it. My chamaecyparis pisifera filifera 'Sungold' survived last winter fine. ItÂs short and was buried in snow, however. I love my thuja occidentalis Âyellow ribbon but here too I wrap every winter as the golden foliage ones are more subject to winter burn. Oddly, however, there is a hedge of some variety of golden thuja a few blocks over, and they donÂt cover in winter at all. I am just wondering what variety that one is. I donÂt recall seeing them in spring (and seeing how much they winter burn) but I will have to keep my eye on those ones. Has anyone tried Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety'? I planted one this past summer. Actually, if it winterkills to the ground that would be fine with me as I prefer it remain a smaller size. Anyone tried Boxwood? I got buxus Âgreen mountain on sale in summer 2004. It survived one winter, though under very good snowcover (itÂs beside the deck, so gets buried in snow very early on in winter). If anything I thought the location might do it in, since it was fairly wet, but so far so good. Does anyone know how diablo ninebark does in clay soil? My purple leaf sandcherry suffers from chlorosis almost every year (though in all honesty this summer was very wet). Was thinking of replacing it, but if diablo ninebark does the same thing I guess I wonÂt bother. Then again, I probably should try improving the soil around the shrub and see if that helps. Glen

No luck yet, Steve, but I have four "batches" in the ovenso to speak! I definitely havent given up on the winter sown ones yetI had some candylily seeds finally germinate a couple weeks ago that apparently had just been waiting to warm up a little! And I have another batch in a baggie that I soaked for a couple days first. And I have another batch just in a baggie that werent soaked first. Both of those are with the few things I still have on the heating pad to keep them nice and toasty. And then I have another batch in the fridge that Im stratifying to try it that way. Ill probably leave them in there for a couple more weeks before I bring them out to warm them up. Lets see! Did I say before that I REALLY want some of these things!!! If all else failshow far are you from the SLC airport! If I ever get back to work, Ill wind up with a layover there sooner or later! In the meantime, Im gonna just keep trying with the seed you sent! Interestingly, when you mentioned the T & M germination database, I looked them up on the Tom Clothier one, and this is what his says: Lavatera cachemiriana, and thuringiaca , Sow at Max. 5ºC (41ºF), germination irregular, often several months . Since L. tauricensis isnt listed, I used the thuringiaca, assuming its the closest thing. Interesting how much difference there is in the recommendations! Based on my experience so far, Im inclined to think the "germination irregular" might be the most accuratewhich definitely means I wont give up on the winter sown ones! And, remember, same thing for the Callirhoe! At Paulinos it wasnt at all unusual to have seedlings coming up around the one planted in the display garden (the same as you have seedlings coming up around your Lavatera), but when one of the growers tried to grow them from seed we collected, the germination was VERY poor, and VERY irregular. Dont give up on that one for sure! I dont have any of the blue-eyed grass seed, but I did have some old yellow-eyed grass seed, Sisyrinchium californicum (I think) that I collected several years back that finally germinated a couple weeks ago. So dont give up the ship yet on your Sisyrinchium either. I have to have some of the Lavatera germinate sometime, cause I gave away the big white hydrangea in my front yard that I posted pictures of last year, and thats where Im planning to plant iteventually! Itll happen! Skybird
