corsican mint

I have a beautiful paver walkway and I would have to buy way too many plants to interplant it with corsican mint. I'd like to get some seed but can't find it anywhere. What's up with that? Is it difficult to grow from seed? I think I've been to every seed catalog on the web with no luck. Any ideas?

I've checked both Chiltern seed in the U.K. and Hardy Plants seed company. Of all the seed companies who would have had it they would have. Have you ever seen corsican mint flower? The seeds must be microscopic and I couldn't picture how they could even be gathered.I've bought plants in the past but they always die out on me and I live in zone 7. Either the summer heat or the winter cold kills them. But maybe growing them in pavement like you plan to might be the solution. Good luck in your search.

Thanks. I've got a little teeny one in a pot---hasn't flowered yet. I'm anxious to see what it does. Thanks for your input. I didn't have much info on it when I bought it but I'm slowly realizing it probably wouldn't make it through my winters anyway unless it self-sows like crazy.

Last year I planted Corsican Mint as a lawn substitite. We live on a slope are are hoping to get rid of the grass completely, as it is hard to mow. The Corsican mint is flourishing here in our woodlands (shady) Pac NW setting. It stayed green all winter, even through freezing temps. And it never needs to be mowed. Yeah! We grew the mint from seed in 4" pots and divided them into little 1" clumps, given that we needed several hundred pots (our lawn is huge), and buying all of those pots would have cost us thousands. The seed was inexpensive. We planted the clumps 12" apart and by the end of summer, most of it was filled in. The only problem is that weeds and grass can pop through the mint, although I think this problem will be aleviated as the mint forms that lush dense carpet, as it is doing now. Corsican Mint is great for foot traffic, and it smells amazing when you walk on it. The tiny scale is gorgeous, like something out of a fairy tale. We have lots of neighborhood cats and I thought they would be attracted to the smell and eat it up. However, we have not run into that problem.

pennyroyal + corsican mint?

I'm planning to grow some Pennyroyal and Corsican mint somewhat close to each other anyway, but this seems like it could be an interesting cross. Pennyroyal is more aggressive, hardier, and has bug repellent properties. Corsican has a creeping growth habit, much shorter stems, and a more pleasant scent and appearance. I've never tried to cross two plants together before. Will both plants end up with hybridized seed? Is it just a matter of collecting and growing the seed from either plant and seeing what kinds of plants develop? Would I get hybrids even without intentionally collecting and planting the seed?

Corsican mint, Mentha requienii, is only hardy to zone 6. Will not grow in your climate, Rosie! And it's a bit of a fussy groundcover even where hardy, as it requires consistently moist soils and some shade to flourish. It also seems to move around at will, sometimes disappearing completely from its original planting location and popping up here and there as the situation suits.
