Gardening in Shade

Anyone know about growing native Rhododendrons/catawbiense & max.

Hi,

On my friend's properts in P.A. he has growing wild Rhododendrons (R. Maximus, white flowers; and R. Catawbiense, pink flowers). I live in New Jersey and I have some shadey, moist ground area that I would like to plant these in. Will they do will if I put them in clay based soil, shaded?

Any tips?

I have been blessed with several 12-15 foot R. Catawbienses. The Northside is the best looking one I have. I do have some clay in my soil but also have plenty of humus. Maybe try to loam up the clay based soil a bit with a combo of peatmoss and manure.

It took me several years to figuure out that my Rodies were Catabiense. They bloomed so much later than most Rodies in this area but grand non the less. Enjoy!!! Don't forget the coffee grounds!!!

Rhodyman, you are a great source of info. Thanks. The name "Linwood" definitely rings a bell, but it's hard to remember something I read 10 years ago. Both times I've been at Rarefind, I've seen many spectacular rhodies but I don't remember seeing something that looked like a big-leaf planted in the open, so you must be right that there haven't been great successes yet. Speaking of "big" except big plants this time, not big leaves, do any of the 50% R. arboreum crosses (most quite old from the 19th century) do well on the East Coast? It seems at least a couple of them must. 'Rhododendron Portraits' lists R. 'Vesuvius' as being very hardy, but it's not in the trade. Van Veen's & Hammonds though have a couple that are from this grex that I want to try. (R. arboreum X US East Coast native rhody) I'd like a plant that resembles the amazing R. arboreum plants I've seen in pictures from the Himalayas & the UK, but would be hardy here since the pure species is not hardy enough, and blooms too early. Red blooms, even if it's a muddy, off-red, and getting as tall as possible. I have a R. arboreum X R. yak hybrid from Greer that has been very tough through heat and dryness so far. (I'm a deadbeat waterer if there ever was one). But with parentage like that, summer isn't going to be the problem as R. arb. is heat tolerant and R. yak is somewhat drought tolerant. The problem is going to be winter and we haven't had one to test it yet.

Chester; Welcome to the GW and the Azalea and Rhododendron Forum. Questions ;; Where did Tony's obtain his Crosses of that R.maximum x ??? was it thru the American Rhododendron Society SEED EXCHANGE?? , and what year?? who was the hybridizer?? Clue that is somewhat helpful is the "late blooming" -- the New York Chapter members" old timers" might have a possible name as to who was propagating, trying to develop "late blooming rhododendrons" or cultivars which would bloom in June to July time frame( graduation/commencement time, and since your Rhodie is 8 ft tall, thus it propably is at least 10 years old or older. Even if you had the jpeg- I doubt whether a true id would be made, thus my suggestion; Start at Tony's, then go to NY CHAPTER ARS web siTE and contact those folks. good luck, and it looks like you have a "keeper" for June flowering period.. tadeusz.

I happen to find their foliage traits to be among the many fine reasons to plant them! More of my thoughts on the plant can be found here: http://americanvoyages.blogspot.com/2013/07/rhododendrons-rosebay-rhododendron.html I would imagine that they flower a bit more given a bit of sun, and I have seen them growing in pretty much any kind of soil imaginable, as long as it was on the acidic side. Thanks for the nursery reference, Bob. I also managed to find Reeseville Ridge nursery out in Wisconsin, but Blue Ridge seems to be easier to order from. Don't get me wrong, I love the variety of cultivars which we have so far been able to grow, but nothing beats the original palette sometimes.

Cat....I think I stick to tried and true entirely too much. I think I should be trying to find something a little different to grow like you and Bill. I've never heard of guinea hen flowers. I do like toad lilies but I tried one and it didn't make it through my winter. I hope you will post photos later. Bill...I never saw a slug in my yard until last year. We had a lot of rain that wouldn't let up and they started showing up. Where do they come from, out of nowhere? [g] You remind me of me... when I can't sleep in the summer, I will get up and go out in my pjs with the flashlight and a paper cup and look for earwigs, which I hate! They seem to love me for some reason. Just the same I enjoy being out there at that hour. You get to see all the night creatures and some of the fragrant plants make the trip worth it. And if there is a moon out, a warm breeze and it's very quiet, it's almost magical! And you can't see all your mistakes at night. [g]

coffee grounds are an excellent source of acid for the rody's.

I planted an r. maximus two years ago in full shade and slightly amended clay (added good composted mulch and a cup of holly-tone). It doesn't look very good, actually, no blooms yet, though I see buds on it this spring; seems a lot more straggly than when it was planted and I don't see any growth. I bought a bigger specimen than I usually do, maybe 3x3' when it was planted. I also should have loosened up the soil to about 12", and didn't; it was at the very end of the bed and I think I had run out of steam by then.

There are existing rhodes in the area, very large old pink rhodes, around 10'+, so I probably should have tried to get the same thing. Maybe catawbiense?

Back to the coffee grounds... how much, and how to apply? Around the base? Around the drip line? Mixed in at planting? I can see me wandering out to the garden every morning after coffee with my grounds in tow.....

Lots of rhodies here. Some very lush, others I would like to help along.

Another question... I have been deadheading blooms after they flower and get great new growth and lots of buds, but I would like to get them to be a bit more dense. How to prune and when? Are they just not getting enough light?

I collect my coffee grounds in a containerr until it was full, then wander out into your garden and place the coffee grounds around the base. shake a little here and there. don't think too much about it. it's just some acid. Keep it on the surface nature will take care of the rest unless it looks unseemly to you then dig around and incorporate them ino the soil. I don't use bleached coffee filters so I also include those. think of it as mulch! :)

denseness is a much wanted dream when it comes to the rhods. Like I said eairler, mine were already 10+ feet in height and a bit lanky. I just started cropping off some of the height. I like a more natural sprawling to them and if you leave the lower branches they will root themsleves into the soil. If you want a more detailed trimming and pruning guide you'll need to search it out on google. This is another good year for blooms for th Cats. It seems to go in cycles on the blooms. But all blooms are welcome when you have full shade right? Enjoy your blooms!!
