Radio Times and Angel Face

Radio Times is quite peachy colored in my garden. Very pretty, but I thought it would be pinker.

Here it is with Stargazer Lillys in the background for color comparison:

This is Jude the Obscure in front of the lillies. It is a softer peachy color than the Radio Times, which is just visible in the back to the right.

Angel Face is lovely, too. The flowers don't last long in our dry climate, though.

And I LOVE Prarie Star:

Sandra, great pics, thank you! I do not have Radio Times, but it looks like I imagined it to be. I think I would call it soft pink or warm pink. Looks fabulous to me.

The name "Radio Times" is very dating to me, though brings back fond memories. When I lived in England as a child, the "Radio Times" was today's "T.V.Guide". I still remember the introduction of television. The Radio Times, still for years reported the TV programs also.

Anyway, lovely pics - of both roses!

Thank you, Pauline. I am glad for the history lesson. I knew it was named after a magazine of some sort, but this adds a dimension of romance to the name.
I love the color, too, actually. It really glows. It is very bright, though soft, and it really stands out. It will be fun to see it grow up. And, it has a wonderful fragrance.
All these roses were just planted in May, so I have enjoyed seeing how they look and smell as they bloom in our climate. You never know until they actually 'bloom where they're planted'!
Vancouver Island must be a wonderful place to live for a gardening enthusiast.

Kim, I was actually thinking of ordering a few roses from Edmunds....and really, the Angel Face I had was doing quite well - before I was put out of commission. I might as well try it again - whats the worst thing that can happen? It will die! I will put it in another spot that gets afternoon shade - if we have another 3 months of 105 daily like last summer - am quite sure that would do it in. At least I know now to just go with the budded stock - actually, I am near Tyler and go there frequently so know I could find it there. The blooms are so gorgeous that it will be worth it to pamper it. Love the ruffled lavender confections.... I broke the patella by slipping on a broken feed bucket handle in my barn. When I think of all the bad horses I have ridden and been bounced off and never a serious injury....ridiculous! Then had surgery on the other knee - patella slipped into trochlear notch - 4 months on a walker....now THAT was pure misery! But...I got a golf cart to keep from going insane and it was the best thing I ever did. You should see all the gardening equipment and plants that I haul around on it! Now I can't live without it. I am about due for a Tyler trip.....when the pear trees start blooming, the nurseries up there are loaded with plants and I must go to Chamblees! I have a list already made....I am sure I can find Angel Face there. Now, if only I could dig holes as fast as I can buy roses..... Judith

NO. You have to feed and water the rose and that is best accomplished FROM THE TOP. The water and nutrients are going to go through the herbs first so they'll get theirs before the rose will. You want the rose healthy and vigorous. Why take half its root area; half its water holding potential away from it for the herbs? What happens when you determine you don't like the bugs or fungal issues and want to spray the rose to get rid of them? You don't want to spray your herbs, even with organics or bacterials. If the plants were in the ground, it would be less of an issue as there would be tremendously greater soil area providing tremendously better water holding potential than the pot does. Even then, though, you would still face the potential spray issue. Plus, the rose will benefit from being regularly fed. The herbs generally don't NEED to be. Kim

Single Petaled Angel Face

You're correct Missflippins, a single is 5 petals. A semi double is 12 to 16 petals what lies in between sometimes is still what I call a single. Last fall Angel Darling was a better looking rose and had fewer petals. I transplanted it this spring and am still waiting for roses that look this good. However, the first rose in the first two photos are Angel Face and it's defintely not a single petaled rose normally. I was comparing color and petal similarity and that it was one of the parent roses to Angel Darling. I shouldn't do that to people, I confuse them when I bring that up. I like to look up the parentage of roses and see if I can still see the form or coloring of the roses.

Lovely pictures, and I especially enjoyed Angel Face since I recently acquired it too. I love the purples and mauves and this one is so fragrant. I like how you have so many companion plants with the roses.

Lovely, I have wanted Prairie Star for a while. I just don't know how it would do in a hot climate. Yours is a beauty.
