Anyone ordered from High Country Gardens????

I just got my order and i tell you these people are real special. I have never in all my 30 years of gardening had such a pleasant shopping experience. The plants are beautiful.you can log onto high countrygardens.com. They are from Sante Fe New Mexico.Im just thrilled can you tell??Look them up.

I love them...they have some great penstemons and lots of plants that don't require lots of irrigation. Many unique varieties and beautiful plants. I also was very pleased with the stuff I bought.

I have four cacti on order with them. One is for a gift--now, I can't wait to see what I get! I figured I would take a chance. Looks like it will be a good one.

Irish Luck and Kiwi Full Monty are both listed as Mediums. But as you can tell from Don Rawson's photo of Irish Luck, it is a very vigorous medium! And, Kiwi Full Monty is also a medium, and it is vigorous too. Therefore, I do not know what to tell you about locating KFM. Someone else who planted Striptease near their walkway had to relocate them because they outgrew the location, overwhelming the path. I think that thread is running around on the back pages of our forum somewhere. My plants in pots are easily adjusted to their growth and also easily hidden when they look ragged. I can move out to prominent spots the top performers. In that respect, I am lucky. But, eventually, if things do not go right, the lump under the rug where I sweep my mistakes gets to be mountain-TALL. :) Do you have ideas where it will go? Fill the bed as you intended and wait for KFM to make its move. Either it likes where you put it and grows like a demon, or it pouts and you move it. Personally, it has grown nicely for me with never a time it did not look good. I'm very pleased with all my Striptease family. Another one, as you can see in the family photo I posted above, that grows similar to KFM with that loose open look, is Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. Whether the two remain similar in form as they grow, only time will tell for me....Maybe I can cheat by checking photos of mature plants, eh....(only problem being, no mature YPDB is in the library photos).

If you're in the Denver Metro area, Dirichmond, Kelly at Timberline Gardens on West 58th in Arvada carries most of the same plants that were sold by High Country--and more. Kelly is VERY into native and xeric plants and grows things you won't find anywhere else in the Denver area--but no mail order! I checked his site and his perennial list for 2012 has been taken down and the new one for 2013 isn't up yet--he must be working on it! In addition to Timberline he has his own private business, Cold Hardy Cactus, where he sells a LARGE selection of hardy cacti plus some really cool agaves, some yuccas and a few other miscellaneous things. And he DOES mail order those, so if you're interested in any of that I recommend you check out his site, linked below. (There's also a direct link to Timberline on his Cactus Home Page!) And if you ARE in the Metro area and are interested in cacti, you can see a LOT of them blooming at Timberline, usually in June, but the extreme heat last year had them all messed up and they bloomed way early! I hadn't followed up on this, and wanted to say that I did get my refund for the plants. Though, when considering *half* of the plants were screwy, I thought they should pay half of the shipping charges - but they didn't. On top of that, of the plants that remained - not all of the survived. Now that it's spring, I can be sure. My garden is pretty bare looking compared to what I'd expected when ordering :/ If the plants were anywhere near as fantastic as I'd read, I'd have been happy to pay the price. Alas.... - Luckily, I've learned a lot more about Xeriscape and native plants and came up with a plan: Learn from sites and people online, catalogs like HCG, cut out or print out photos and info on water, sun, height, width, and bloom times - Put them in a 'diary'. (My diary is a simple black and white "Composition" book from the supermarket.) Then bring that with me to local nurseries and even cheapo big stores. This has worked out great! I found some sweet Gazanias for 1/2 the price of HCG and they are 4 times the size. They are doing better than any of my HCG plants. It's so handy to take this diary everywhere - It helps me to *focus* and keeps me from getting a mass of plants that won't work in my garden (which I have done *many* times - who can resist pretty flowers?!) Many of you have probably done something like this already, but I'm a bit slow when it comes to desert gardening and wish someone had told me to do it when we first moved here! I agree with what Jackie said. But of course I have to add my own 2¢ worth. Lots of plants can sucker, not just roses. My tree-form-trained crape myrtle sent up suckers from the root for its first 10 years or so, and still tries now and then. There are 4 redwood trees near our house and I cut root suckers off those All.The.Time. In my personal experience, the worst offenders in the rose world are the gallicas and the rugosas, also pretty much any kind of species rose. Damasks and albas follow after that. Rose de Rescht will sucker after it is well established. So will Grandmother's Hat, though so far it stays within a foot or two of the base. The difference between own-root suckering and grafted root suckering is that if you allow a grafted plant to sucker from the rootstock, it will eventually kill the scion rose and the rootstock will take over. With own root suckering you just get more of the same rose. Sometimes more than you want. I am having a similar problem with one of my oranges, 'Midnight', a Valencia-type orange. It must be less vigorous than my other oranges because it is the only one that is doing this. I've had to cut off rootstock suckers several years in a row, and boy, that rootstock is nasty to handle. I ordered quite a bit from them, i have to say i was a little disapointed over the small plants i recieved, they were like seedlings, but maybe its because i ordered them in the fall, However all of the plants are alive and Finally growing.I just thought for the prices they should at least give you more than just seedlings.

Alot of the plants I ordered you had your choice of 2 sizes. I took the bigger I figured it had a better chance. They were beautiful . Im glad I did that. Id rather pay a little more.

I order from them at least twice a year and since I live in NM I can drive to their nursery occasionally. Always top-quality plants and outstanding customer service. All plants shipped in pots, always on time and some perennials with 18" stems. Every plant I've ever received has been healthy with a good-sized root system. Plants are guaranteed and you will ALWAYS get an answer on the phone or email. After reading about some of the nightmares some folks have gone thru with mail-order plants it's good to know there's a nursery out there that DOES care about customer service and quality.

I just planted my first order form them and I'm thrilled. Beautiful healthy plants, arrive strong and take off so quickly. Their packaging is excellent, very well designed, for shipping with as little trauma as possible, given the brutality that is unavoidable from carriers. I will order from them often!

I've also had a very nice experience with this company. The plants were a little small but they grew like crazy. They are very helpful in answering your questions via email also.

I love High Country Gardens. I ordered multiple times from them this Spring and all the plants are thriving in my garden. I have to say this is the best mail order nursery I have ever dealt with.

I've ordered from them for several years, and have been well pleased. I find them a little bit pricey, but they come very well packed, and in good shape, and over the years, I have done LOTS of mail order shopping. They have the best I have seen.
Not everything that I purchased from them have lived, but that is not their fault they all started off good. I would order again without hesitation.

I was elated when I found this company. They're just what I need to garden in the Desert. I have learned alot from this company. They sell products that help me amend my poor desert soil and to help keep my plants healthy. I have ordered their compost, Yum Yum fertilizer, Planters II fertilizer. Also, I have two Sedums from them. I did think they were a little too small for the price, but they're still alive. I'm expecting two larger plants in Feb. to try. I only wished I had found them sooner, before I had planted other plants, and lost quite a few.
