I direct sow just about everything, except for my fruit trees and bushes. I save seeds from one year to the next, and I have plenty of them, so I can take chances like that. Plus, if I don't have to buy squash or watermelon seeds or whatever, I can use that money to buy things like lavender plants and seeds, once in awhile. Now that I've got he lavender plants, I'll be saving seeds from them, too. Once I have too many such plants, I'll be able to barter or trade them for something I want or need in the garden...

Hi Julia, If I'm having trouble separating the seed from the calyx, I leave them in a paper bag and let them dry longer. The calyx will eventually get bone dry and will break apart easier. If you need them sooner for a trade, let the trader know they are not separated because it is tedious and time consuming. They should be happy to get the seeds regardless! Remy

They are small and dark like poppy seeds. I just cut the stalks and hang them upsidedown in a bowl and let them dry a bit. I shake cuttings and the seed falls out. I must say, my lavender does not produce a lot of seed, but there is generally enough for a few trades or gifts. The worst thing that comes of this is that your house smells wonderful. I love the scent of lavender.
