Guerilla gardening plant suggestions?

Hi,

I wanted to try a tiny bit of guerrilla gardening for the first time this spring. There is an abandoned car lot in our village that has a big rock pile that they used park a new car on. The rock pile has enough soil in-between the rocks that weeds grow. It faces south so gets good sun. My question is, what plant or seeds can anyone recommend for this spot? I may be able to water it a few times but it will mostly be on it's own for water. The other complication is that it may be subject to deer grazing, although this is just a possibility. I'm more concerned about the water than the deer. I'm interested in planting edible plants although edible and ornamental is good too! Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would imagine you could plant strawberries, depending on how much soil you can get to you might be able to plant onion and garlic. You could also do a search or call your local Master Gardener office and ask what grows in the wild and plant that. You might even be able to get away with some blueberries or tomatoes?.

Great idea!

Are you planning on harvesting the edibles? And how often would you be able to work on the spot?

If you're not going to be there regularly, I would think most edibles would be a deer magnet.

You could try some kind of bramble fruit (blackberries, raspberries). Could be a little spendy, tho' which is often not something you want with guerilla gardening. Most edibles require better soil and more consistent water. But a lot of herbs do well in rocky, dry soil. Think Mediterranean plants like thyme, savory and lavender.

As far as ornamentals go, you could have great success with sedums. They love that kind of site, and they will spread and choke out a lot of weeds in the process. They come in an incredible range of shapes, sizees and colors, and it's always kindaa nice to walk by and think "*I* planted that blazing mound of gold, and that patch of blood red creepers!"

I have an 8 acre section of north Louisiana that would be available for pine tree planting sometime this coming winter. I'll even furnish the seedlings and tools for you to plant them. It could be a tree-planting vacation! Take a trip, see the country, plant some pine trees, help the environment, what could be better? Email me if you're interested. Another thought would be to seek out elderly people in your area whose lots look like they could use a tree and offer to purchase and plant one for them. You'll be helping shade the world and helping people at the same time.

Lovely thoughts. I pick up trash along our rural street. Big trash. We are on the route to the Hillsborough County dump and stuff flies out of vehicles all the time. The best part is that I am finally able to just do it and not feel mad or resentful. Last week it was a broken vinyl chair and now there is a large child's pool or animal feeder bin out there. I am just waiting until I am in the truck again. No special trips to save my gas.

Dear Marcus, Nope, probably not. It is opportunistic by nature. **** I spent Saturday helping a friend who just moved plant bulbs around her house. There was an old rhubarb bed, which we dug up, refilled with manure, and replanted the healty roots, discarding old rotten ones. (Started a compost heap.) Brought over some herbs which went in above and between bulb groups. Found some strawberries in a side bed, and moved them out into the sun. Showed her and the kids what a rose hip is, and how to use it. Identified various edible plants (sorrel, salmonberries, etc.) and how to use them. This is another aspect of guerilla gardening.
