'Hot Lips' Salvia

I have 3 beautiful plants of Hot Lips salvia.

I see it on members want list, but have never seen anything that looks like a seed on mine.

Same with my Mystic Blue Spires.

Do they make seeds and how do harvest them.

Hi Ruth,
I think you would get the best answers re-asking this on the Salvia forum. There's a few knowledgeable salvia lovers over there. I suspect they may be varieties that are sterile or harldy make seeds, and will not come true from seed even if they do. Salvias that make seed seem to do so in large quantities so that is why I suspect sterility, but of course I could be wrong : )

I grow Mystic Spires and love it. It is a hybrid, so I have never tried to save seed, assuming they wouldn't come true. It's very easy to root cuttings from it though.

Wow Mikey, When you say well rooted , you mean well rooted(they were small shrubs!). I only hope I can send you enough to make you equally pleased with the exchange. Today is my birthday & it was a great one. I must say the chamedroides was about 4x the size of a certain well known mail order nursery at which I paid $11 for a plant that didn't overwinter. They are eternal optimists with their zones. I told Ginny Hunt that I really appreciated her more conservative numbers. I'd rather bring it in than lose my investment! Yes at $11 plus shipping, it could be considered an investment, lol. I wait until I see fresh new growth before cutting back microphyllas. That being said you could probably get away with it. The growth on old wood if left should provide you with earlier flowers, another reason to hold back the clippers.

Hello, I just went out to my planter and found a half buried tag, and realized that what I have is NOT Hot Lips, but Navajo Red! Sometimes the flowers come with a mix of whitish-pink on them, so I think that's why I thought it was Hot Lips. Most of the flowers have been bright red, though. Sorry for this big faux pas - I am obviously new to salvias and don't know much about them. Thanks!

Hot lips rarely set seed and if they do, they do not come true. This is what I have heard. I grow S. hotlips and I have never seen seed on mine either. It grows from cuttings very easily. I have seen seed on the indigo spires at the store neer by me on their display plant. I have heard the indigo spires does not set seed. How about that for conflicting info.
