Seed-startin Disaster Last Year (Funny Story)
Comments (5)Yes, it was the corn gluten! It will inhibit the development of any seed (wanted or unwanted). About the only things that grew in my "small crops section" were some broccoli and lettuce transplants and a few very determined radishes. Needless to say, my followup plantings of seeds fared no better. I was just thinking "nitrogen" and forgetting the source! LOL! I can laugh now, but I was sure confused last year....See MoreFunny Stories dealing with Wsing
Comments (10)I like to use 2 liter pop bottles. Around here there's a 5 cent bottle return on them so we have recycling machines at the entrance to grocery stores. So I'm heading in to the grocer store one day, and I see a 30 something age woman with quite a few pop bottles, and I offer to give her the recycling money for them. She goes right into her own story of saving milk cartons for a school project and wants to know what project with the kids I am doing, LOL. I tell her, "well sort of making greenhouses." She says, "Oh I've heard of doing that." LOL. Remy...See MoreFunny citrus stories
Comments (7)About 7 or 8 years ago, I spent a week on the small island of Bequia, part of St-Vincent and the Grenadines. St-Vincent has a great lager beer- Hairoun. In the small main town of Bequia, I searched in vain, trying to find some limes to add to my beer. Alas, none were available in the marketplace On our final day, the property owner came to pick us up and take us to the ferry. As we stood with our bags ready, just outside our front door of the cottage, he asked if we'd enjoyed our stay. I told him that my only complaint was that I couldn't find any limes in the marketplace for my Hairoun beer. Without moving a step, he reached out beside him and plucked a lime of the small tree beside our cottage, and handed it to me! Sheepishly I put the lime in my pocket, and forgot all about it until I was back in Canada. (I forgot to declare it at customs- a BIG no-no!) I used that lime in some Canadian beer, and saved the seeds- and grew a couple. You can see a picture of the tree(s) elsewhere in the forum here, with my concernss. Here is a link that might be useful: Bequia info...See MoreFunny seed story
Comments (8)That's a good story! I planted seed I saved from 2008 over this winter. It was stored in the fridge for a while, then put in my seed box during the move (that means it spent a month in storage on the moving truck - no idea what the temps were for that), then back into the fridge when i found them during unpacking. Then, I winter-sowed them in February! I didn't know what to expect, but a LOT of them germinated (100% from some crosses!). I guess some seeds are a lot tougher than we think.
