zone 7B overwintering question

Does anyone living in zone 7B has success overwintering these salvias outdoors w/ mulch: Mexicana 'Limelight', darcyi (schaffneri?) red flowers, 'Trinidad Pink', guarantica 'Van Remsen', guarantica from Costa Rica, 'Van Houtti' and 'Coccinea pink'? The roots are well established and some are in ground and some in pots. Just bought a small greenhouse and trying to decide which ones I need to bring inside.

I live in Mid-Atlantic region (Southern Maryland)

Plant Delights nursery lists darcyi and La Trinidad Pink as hardy to zone 7 so if you are in 7b with well established plants that are in well draining soil then they should be okay as long as you don't cut them back until spring.

Van Houtti has never been hardy for me, although I'm a half or a full zone colder. Guarantica will probably come back for you, locally Black & Blue and Argentina Skies usually overwinter. I've got a bunch of Mexicana Limelight out in the garden about to bloom - finally. I don't believe they are hardy, so I've taken cuttings. Salvia coccinea is not hardy. They are self seeding, but don't sprout until the ground is thoroughly warmed up. For that reason I start a batch in late winter indoors. Lastly, I'd love to know how you make out with Darcyi. That's one I want to try next year and I'm as uncertain as you are. Check out A World of Salvias, there may be some mention of its hardiness there.

Hello, Just wanted to butt in and say that I have plenty of seeds for the orange milkweed or butterflyweed, and I have lots of seed pods forming as we speak. I also have many volunteer baby Rue plants that could probably be mailed in a pinch. I haven't checked for seeds of the Rue, because I have so much already growing. Unfortunately, I have yet to see any Giant Swallowtail action, despite having every host plant it is known to frequent. I also have seeds for two other varieties of milkweed, A. incarnata (swamp) and one called "Red" by Seed Saver's Exchange. If you're looking for seeds, try the wintersowing forum--also an excellent way to get multiple plants started inexpensively and very reliably. I'm in Raleigh NC which is also zone 7b and I leave mine outside in the ground and it has come back every year. It does suffer for it and it can be slow to emerge in the spring but it has proven hardy for me. It is also easy from cuttings so I take cuttings in the early summer and keep a few of them inside the house in the winter just in case we have a really bad cold snap. They lose their leaves in the winter even when inside so you would think they are dead but they aren't.

Sorry, I don't check this forum often. Are you looking for a brand recommendation or just info in general? I don't have one but my neighbor (also trying dwarf trees) & a good friend both do. I can ask around for you. What size are you looking for? I will mention that I had one in a previous home and battled aphids. Not sure if it was from the previous owner who had quite a bit in the greenhouse or something I brought home from the nursery. Just be vigilant. We also look after our neighbor's greenhouse when they are out of town. I do know they keep a small heater in case the weather gets really cold/freezing. We're just outside Huntsville if that helps.

Sorry it took me so long to get online - my new job keeps sending me away. Now I'm back and busy busy busy in the garden and hopefully not getting on an airplane for a long long while (remember those reports of bumpy air landings in NYC the other week - well I was on one of those planes!! and I hate to fly). The Raleigh Spring Swap is now posted in the Exchange sub-forum (look up at the top of this page). If you find it all overwhelming just attend your first one and it will all make sense after that. I will be bringing some large potted plants that I no longer have room for. They will go in the general swap because I don't really need any special trading. I can't wait to see everybody.

Of the ones you mentioned, Mexicana 'Limelight', darcyi (schaffneri?) red flowers, and 'Trinidad Pink'are hardy in zone 7b. S. guarantica 'Van Remsen' is new and probably hardy; S. guarantica from Costa Rica makes it most winters and can benefit from a winter mulch. The S. 'Van Houtti'varieties die back and sprout suddenly in the spring, but are not hardy. S. 'Coccinea pink' self-sows just as wardw posted.

The splendens vanhouttii has reseeded for me but only a few are the dark maroon,purple the others are red. They are not as tall as the original thankfully but they are like the coccinea they reseed alot. I'm in zone 6. Sarah

'Limelight' didn't overwinter for me in zone 7a but 'Van houttei' did one or two years. It came back so late that it never amounted to much, though, so I prefer to take cuttings. The van houttei form 'Carribean Coral' didn't overwinter last year. I've had darcyi come back but lost it this summer. Don't know if it was the heat or what. My S. corrgata died the day we topped 100 degrees F.

I had darcy last year it didn't come back this year I think it likes well drained lime rich soil. I don't have either. I'm not sure but I think caribean coral might have either reseeded or came back it's an orange,reddish color I think I didn't plant it this year but some of my salvias look just like it. It's still blooming Sarah
