Yes I new azurea was hardy for us up here in the north east that is why I decided to add it to my very limited collection. Thank God too b/c my kitchen and mud room are a bit overcrowded right now. I am actually thinking of enclosing my covered porch for the winter since it has a southern exposure where I can keep the plants for much of the winter and only having to bring them in on the coldest days.

uliginosa, greggii, microphylla, mexicana, madrensis, involucrata, azurea, darcyi, cinnabarina?, melissodora, coccinea, ballotaeflora, engelmannii, farinacea, Indigo Spires, leucantha, guaranitica -both light and dark blue, Blue Chiquita, miniata, fulgens, reptans, penstemenoides. With heavy clay soil and wet winters, some have died of wet feet, or just expire after a couple of years. The one I really regret losing is regla. I lost all three plants in a period of two years. The apricot and purple microphylla/greggii/jamensis crosses just don't make it here in the ground. Bicolor also expired, as did chamaedryoides and chiapensis. Elegans didn't return last year. Miniata and fulgens are in pots and are moved to a protected area on the south side of the house now.

I bought a couple of clevelandi salvias. i heard that they don't grow for long unless theyre planted in sand. i live in Tucson Az. Do you have any advice for me. Also do any other salvias smell as good and waft as well as that one.

Bumping this up so some of the new folks can add their list.
I have acquired Salvia "Hot Lips" & Salvia chamaedryoides(thanks Mikey)& Salvia guaranitica 'Argentine Skies'(thanks Brian). The Hot Lips & the Argentine Skies bloomed their heads off- Hot Lips the entire season!. The Chaemedroides has bloomed a small amount this summer- it was shaded out by a huge Agastache rupestris in the same whiskey barrel. And I got some guaranitica species,guaranitica Costa Rican blue, nilotica, mexicana "Limelight" & Waverly at the MAG swaps(thanks to all).

But I lost quite a few last winter - even some overwintered in the garage or house. I lost:Salvia apiana,Salvia buchananii, Salvia chiapensis,Salvia clevelandii X leucophylla 'Pozo Blue', Salvia coahuilensis "Saltillo", greggii"Orange", Salvia "Indigo Spires" & Salvia jamensis "Sierra San Antonio".

Salvia roemeriana bloomed fully(not like last year when it created seeds without blooms)after overwintering- then promptly died!

I found out my seed grown jurisicii was really pratensis & my seed grown virgata was really viscosa but all in all it was a really good year. I had a lot of great reseeders, Salvia greggii 'Raspberry Royale bloomed continuously without a 10 minute break & I found new people to trade with near & far. In the Salvia world , all is good.

Please let my "Limelight" bloom before we have a hard frost! ;-)

Rose - interesting report, but depressing since you lost several plants that I've become fond of this summer.

How did you try to overwinter Indigo Spires? I've taken cuttings and also plan to overwinter a big pot of it on the above freezing back porch. This is such a good plant, besides being lovely it is attractive to other hummingbirds and butterflies. And because it is so vigorous it makes the gardener appear to have a magic touch.

Did you put 'Raspberry Royal' in the ground? I kept one in an undersized pot all summer. Like yours it was never out of bloom, but it didn't grow more than 10 inches tall. It is one I'm considering propagating over the winter for a couple of hummingbird garden projects. How tall and wide did yours get? Another raspberry that has bloomed well is 'Delight'. My only gripe with it is that it was very brittle for me. The broken branches were of some use, since there are now more that a dozen foot tall cuttings out in the veggie garden

Sierra San Antonio was pretty, but for me it didn't bloom particularly well. I love the color and hope a more vigorous version may eventually be available.

I also grew a mass planting of a red salvia Greggi Navaho at a nature center this year from cuttings. It did very well, but I wonder if it will survive the winter. I'm hoping it was just our outstandingly wet and cold winter last year that killed my plants at home.

Chaemedroides has been on my want list for some time.

My 'Limelight' started blooming a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, the plants were heavily battered on several occasions by storms and the purple flowers are opening with a damaged look - like a three day old Black & Blue. I'll try to keep one cutting going and next year, rather than planting it in the ground, put it in a heavily staked and wired pot.

New to me was S Coahuiliensis. I was OK and if I lose it that's OK too. My overwintered in the ground Black & Blue never looked particularly good this year, next year I'll feed them heavily and see if that helps. Purple Majesty, new to me, and not planted until mid July made a nice late show, and if I can overwinter cuttings, is a keeper. And what can you say about coccinea? Both Lady in Red and Coral Nymph bloomed heavily all season, attracted hummers like crazy, and kept me busy deadheading. The Uliginosa grew seven feet tall and was never without hundreds of blooms. The new S. Microphylla San Carlos Festival planting increased in vigor as the summer moved on and outgrew and outbloomed Wild Watermelon. New Marachino plants were slow to start, but by September had reached several feet and finally began to bloom. Also new to me was a small start of Argentina Skies. It didn't bloom until late August.

Are you able to overwinter your agastache rupestris in the whiskey barrel. It was my first year for this impressive plant. It would appear to be useful for a sandy waste area in need of hardy plants that can take drought and resist deer browse. Does it bloom the first year from seed?

Lastly, did you grow your roemeriana in part shade? I'd like to try it next year in an area which gets about 1/3 day sun.

Well...Salvia spathacea survived the winter, although it's emerging only slowly. Surprisingly, some of my Salvia farinacea 'Victoria' survived, as well. I suspect Salvia semiatrata may be history, and that the Salvia guaraniticas may be gone as well. Same with Salvia elegans and Salvia leucantha. I'm not going to write them off as dead just yet, because I know better. I don't know about Salvia reptans yet, either.

Salvia pachyphylla, Salvia x jamensis, Salvia hians, Salvia verticillata, Salvia greggii (assorted), Salvia microphylla, Salvia chamaedryoides and Salvia dorrii are all doing fine.

I forgot. I have Salvia azurea, although I haven't gone out and checked how it survived the winter. S. dorrii survived, S. reptens survived, and I forgot (and it survived) all about S. penstemonoides. I don't have a lot of hope for S. semiatrata. Sigh.

I have been salivating reading everyone's fine collection of salvias. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of resources locally to expand on my modest collection. I particularly want salvia 'mulberry Jam', van houitti 'paul', and salvia waverly. Anybody who knows where online (other than Avant Gardens) I could order these from? Also, anybody with some of these plants to sell/exchange?
