sansevierias/snake plant repotting disaster

I re-potted my sansevierias/snake plant into a pot that in retrospect is entirely too large. Thinking that the trauma of another re-potting would be worse than just letting it be, I left it alone. That was about 7 months ago (springtime). I tied the leaves together and they've stayed pretty upright, but they seem to be completely separating from the soil - the soil around it sort of condensed and sunk into the pot (used regular potting soil - I guess a 50/50 perlite/potting soil would have been better? Anyway, should I re-pot it into a smaller pot, buy some smaller plants and plant them around it for support, or just use it for kindling?

Thanks!
