Hot Lips Salvia

Hi All

I have a couple of the Hot Lips Salvia outside on the deck in a planter. The nights here are now hitting the freezing point, but the plants are still blooming. I would like to try to save them over winter, but outside is out of the question since it gets down to -40 (C or F, it's the same!)

I don't have a heated sunroom or greenhouse. If I cut the plants down (to the ground?) and just bring the planter in and keep it in the cooler and darker basement, might they survive? Do I water or hope that they go dormant until the Spring?

Thanks in advance for any help and advise
