Stephen, I have a Dictionary of Horticulture, published by the National Gardening Association (1994) that contains a lot of gardening terms together with botanical definitions of plant parts, plant names and plant common names. However, there are locational/regional differences that would not necessarily apply to the UK or the EU. For example, the term 'secateurs' is seldom, ever heard in this country (and not included in my dictionary) - they are simply 'pruners'. And 'compost' here means something different from 'compost' to you :-) Online sources may be your best bet but you kinda have to know the term before you can find out the explanation or definition! I'd hunt out some bookstores in your locale that offered a big selection of gardening texts and maybe even engage the sales staff to help you locate or order a dictionary similar to mine but that addresses the common terminology unique to your area.

Don't know what the life expectancy of freshly Japanese maple seeds is. My guess is that a lot depends on how the seeds are stored. The best way to store them is (in my opinion) cool and dry in the fridge at a temperature around 5C. / 41F. You can use a zip lock bag or a small plastic box with a cover for this.
