Ptilotus 'Joey' what does the seed look like?Also angelonia

I have one small plant, and I wan to save the seed. Can anyone tell me what to look for?

I also have angelonia the serena series. How do I find the seed on these?

Hi Tammy,
Angelonia just started to be from seed in recent years so I don't think you are not going to find better info than from the other post you made. I do want to correct something. Just because the variety you got came from seed does not mean it will come true. You can buy many hybrids to grow from seeds, but the seed saved from them will vary. I did not do a search to see if the Serena series is F1 seed.

I searched to find out about the Ptilotus, but had no luck. One site has a botanical print, but I can't get the page to load. Anyway, I did learn that your plant is on the amaranth family. It has a look like celosia which is also in the amaranth family so I'm betting the seed will be nestled at the base of the flowers along the stalk just like celosia. The flowers will dry and the small ball seeds will become evident.

Thanks Remy, I hadnt thought about them not coming true to parent just because they can be grown from seed. I might be best with doing as the other poster commented about taking cuttings of angelonia over winter. I certainly havent seen seed pods on mine yet anyway. I hope Joey will be different.

archangelus2, Well, I can see a couple of things that might be giving you a problem. First, as you've mentioned, the seeds are tiny. When you sow tiny seeds in a 'rather course potting mix', it's easy for those seeds to gradually get worked down deeper into that mix. Every time you use your spray bottle, you could easily cause the seeds to go deeper. As you know the seeds should be on the surface, not covered with the potting mix. They may be too deep to germinate now; not necessarily, but certainly a possibility. Also, if the seeds are too deep, too wet, and too cold, rotting is possible. Regarding your question about the outside temperatures, assuming the seeds are still viable, I don't think the cooler temperatures would prevent germination, just delay it. I wish you luck with those seeds! If they haven't been buried too deeply, they still might germinate for you. I hope so, Angelonias are such beautiful and carefree plants! Art

Here it is late September and these flowers are still kicking some butt! Very colorful and getting very large. I haven't had to snip mine back yet and they ware still going strong. I'm afraid to cut them back for fear that they will not bloom again. I read on another posting board where someone snipped them and they didn't ever grow. I think they are growing so fast and so diligently because of the heat here in Dallas. This crazy city just never cools down; 95 during the day and 78 at night. As I said in my earlier post, I planted a huge mass of them in my annual bed. The bed itself is about 5 ft by 8 feet and all angelonias. All of my neighbors have passed by asking what it is that I planted this year becuase of the showy purple, blue and white flowes...they are so different than what gardeners usually plant in a large flower bed for a mass affect. I hope I can find them next year around here. I'll definitely buy some more next year if I find them. I never water them and they don't appear to need much water. For those of us who live in the southern states, I'd strongly recommend this plant. Now, I just hope my agapanthus blooms again next year as well. Does anyone have any luck with that plant?????? Marilyn's right - it's only a true perennial in zone 10. Grows like a weed in my friend's garden - in Mexico! lol! Still, I plant it every year, usually in containers. And I've had success having it winter over if I remember to cut it back in Nov., then move the container to a sheltered spot on my deck. When my night temps get into the 30s consistently, I move the container into my potting room indoors. I put it up on a shelf where it stays around 65 deg. This might work for some of you in colder areas. One other thing, I've found they like good draining soil and not a lot of fussing. I side dressed one with compost and it started looking floppy. I grew Angelonia from seed this year that I saved from the Serena series last year. Of course I don't have the original plants to compare this year's version to, but I don't recognize any signicant deterioration-in fact, they are lovely again this year. If they were F1's they seem to be fine when removed one generation.
Ptilotus seeds are stiff bars enclosed by "fuzz". I got my original seeds from Australia so I am not sure if commercial growers clean them before they are sold, but the ones I harvested a few days ago look just like the ones I started with. I have been told that only the seeds from well matured seedheads will germinate, so I waited until the blooms turned completely gray to harvest. As you crumble the seed head, the bars seem to be enclosed in the petal base similar to the way a Gomphrena seed is held within a puffy petal base only this is not as fluffy. I was instructed to take a pin and pull away a bit of the fuzz to expose the seed and I did that. I only had about 50% germination in the greenhouse, but I may not have allowed enough time for all of them to germinate.
